And that's it. Full time! What an end to the game, real end to end stuff with a crazy own goal from Reina. It's been a weekend of goalkeeping errors. Thanks for joining us today, and stay with Goal.com for all the post-match reaction.
ANOTHER RED! And it's for Koscielny this time for a second yellow in as many minutes. He bats away the ball from Torres with his hand, but it was hit right at him. Another harsh red from Atkinson?
...and it's a GREAT HIT! But Almunia palms it wide for a corner.
Koscielny takes a booking for a high kick at Kuyt, as Liverpool press for a late winner. Gerrard lines up a free-kick 30-yards from goal...
Yellow/Red Laurent Koscielny
Yellow Card Laurent Koscielny
Own Goal José Reina Paez
OH DEAR REINA. Arsenal equalise but it's a blunder from Reina. He drops a cross under pressure from Chamakh, the ball hits the post and he goes to gather it but only pushes it into his own net. It had been coming, but not like that.
Furious scramble in the Liverpool box but Walcott can't capitalise. It's ALL Arsenal at the moment. You can feel the Gunners fans trying to suck the ball into the goal.
BEAUTIFUL move from Arsenal and it's Rosicky involved again, going for a nice one-two with van Persie, but Reina tips his shot over.
Yellow Card Tomas Rosicky
Rosicky, clearly Arsenal's best player, gets a yellow for a late lunge at Gerrard. And Agger returns to the field to rapturous applause from the home fans.
Meanwhile, Daniel Agger is off the field, meaning Liverpool are down to nine, with what looks like concussion. Rodriguez has slotted in at left-back.
Liverpool want a penalty for a foul on Torres. Koscielny certainly held his arm but a foul, if any, started outside the area. Atkinson says play on.
Walcott tries to whip one into the top corner from the edge of the area, but it's high and wide.
Substitution Javier Mascherano Lucas Leiva
And another change. Feels like we've had hundreds today. Lucas comes on for the industrious Mascherano, who has had a very good game today - possibly his last for Liverpool.
Substitution A. Diaby Robin van Persie
And now it's time for Wenger to bring on his talisman, Robin van Persie coming on for Abou Diaby, who is booed as he leaves the pitch. Er...?
Substitution David Ngog Fernando Torres
Huge cheer for Torres, who replaces Ngog. Liverpool will need him as it's all Arsenal at the moment, who have 63 per cent possession.
Rather surprisingly Theo Walcott steps up to take the free-kick but has a decent effort, which Reina tips wide. From the corner Koscielny scuffs his shot.
Here comes Torres! The Spanish talisman is getting ready to come on. Meanwhile, on the pitch Gerrard earns a yellow card for a late lunge on Chamakh.
Yellow Card Steven Gerrard
GREAT chance for Vermaelen to equalise. Rosicky knocks in a lovely cross but the big defender can't steer it goalwards.
Lovely stuff from Kuyt on the touchline, but his ball across the area is missed by everyone. Liverpool are playing like they're the ones with a one-man advantage.
Substitution Milan Jovanović Maxi Rodríguez
And it's a change for Liverpool, Maxi Rodriguez replacing Jovanovic.
Substitution Jack Wilshere Tomas Rosicky
Roll of the dice from Wenger: taking off Eboue and Wilshere for Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky.
Substitution Emmanuel Eboue Theo Walcott
Arsenal come back into the game, with some neat play on the edge of the box (no surprise there) and earn a corner, but from the kick Wilshere can't get his volley on target.
ANOTHER headed chance for Liverpool. This time Ngog from a peach of a Gerrard cross, but the youngster can't double his tally, heading well wide.
It's all Liverpool at the moment, cross after cross is coming into the Arsenal box and the Gunners look all at sea. A second goal for Woy's Boys wouldn't be a surprise...
And it's nearly two! Gerrard whips in a free-kick and Almunia is yet again nowhere near it, but Skrtel can't get his header on target. Whatever Woy said at half-time is doing the trick.
Goal David Ngog
GOAL! Didn't expect that! Ngog smashes it in the near post with a lethal finish. The sort Torres would be proud of. 1-0 Liverpool. It came from Arsenal giving the ball away on the edge of their own area, sloppy stuff.
Thoughts on Cole's red card, folks? Looked more like he was trying to block Koscielny's clearance but was a tad over zealous. Law book says dangerous play is a red card, though. Was Atkinson a bit harsh? Your thoughts? Meanwhile, the second half has resumed and the Gunners defender, who was taken off on a stretcher as the half-time whistle went, is back out, although limping with lots of swelling on his knee and, rather harshly, is the recipient of boos from the home fans.
And that's half-time. What an end to the first period. It's been a very entertaining game so far, but the talking point will be Joe Cole's red card. Has he ever been sent off before? Apparently not. Woy has work to do during the break. See you in 15 minutes.
Red Card Joe Cole
RED CARD! For Joe Cole! On his league debut. He lunges high on Koscielny and Atkinson immediately brandishes the red card. Silly challenge. Now Woy has work to do.
And it's nearly a goal from the resulting corner! Ngog wins the header but Clichy blocks it on the line.
Lovely one-two between Johnson and Kuyt, with the full-back lashing in a left-foot shot from the edge of the area which Almunia tips over.
Yellow Card Jack Wilshere
Wilshere goes in studs up on Javier Mascherano and catches the Argentine, who reacts by rolling around in pain. Slightly hypocritical there, Masch. Wilshere gets a booking for his troubles.
Jovanovic beats the offside trap thanks to this phase one/phase two rubbish, but smashed it wide when a square ball to Cole would have been the smart thing to do.
Flap, flap. Almunia does his best Superman impression with a Gerrard corner and barely gets a touch. Not doing his chances of keeping the No.1 shirt any help.
And that's why Arsenal don't really try shots from long range: Clichy goes for a piledriver but it's wide and high.
It's all Arsenal at the moment, with patient build up, but Liverpool remain threatening on the break. Well, threatening until Ngog gets on the ball...
The tables have turned somewhat, and now Arsenal are on top, knocking it around neatly and winning two quick corners. Vermaelan heads over the second but Wenger will be happier.
...and fires right into the wall. Poor. Vermaelen smashes the rebound wide.
Clumsy challenge from Steven Gerrard on Emanuel Eboue leads to an Arsenal free-kick which Nasri lines up...
Liverpool are playing some very nice, quick football and The Kop is in full voice. Is it 1982?
Glen Johnson is at it again, steaming down the right and another cross, but again, it's too high. Has he not seen how tall Joe Cole is?
Is Ngog the new Filippo Inzaghi? The Frenchman has been caught offside 400 times already today. We're on for a record, me thinks, folks.
Nice build up play from Liverpool sees Glen Johnson burst into the box but his cross is behind Joe Cole.
Jamie Carragher boots a ball high into the air, which Reina catches. Pass back? Did Carragher mean it? Does he ever mean anything?
Milan Jovanovic has had enough already, he takes on the entire Arsenal defence before feeding Dirk Kuyt, whose cross is too close to Almunia.
Samir Nasri whips in a ball from the left but it sails over everyone. It followed a scrap in the Liverpool box after a corner. Arsenal on top so far.
First bit of action as Thomas Vermaelen smashed in a long range free-kick, but Pepe Reina is equal to it, fisting the ball away.
As expected it's bright and eye catching - and that's just Arsenal's garish yellow away kit. Yuk! The game is fast-paced so far, both teams trying to get on top early.
Here we go. Both teams with one up front, Chamakh with slightly more pedigree than David Ngog, but this is the Premier League and anything can happen. (Insert Blackpool reference here)
New boy Marouane Chamakh makes his first league start for the Gunners while young gun Jack Wishere gets a starting place after an impressive pre-season. ARSENAL: Almunia; Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Clichy; Eboue, Diaby, Wilshere, Nasri; Arshavin, Chamakh.
Hello to you all and welcome to the first blockbuster of the new Premier League as Arsenal travel to Anfield. James Daly here with you for this afternoon's action. Post any comments and questions below. It's Woy Hodgson's first game as Liverpool boss and he'll be hoping for a good start. Fernando Torres - fresh from committing his future to the Reds - only makes the bench. LIVERPOOL: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Carragher, Agger; Kuyt, Mascherano, Cole, Gerrard, Jovanovic.
