Boston Breakers 3-1 Atlanta Beat: Breakers Jump To Second Place
Kelly Smith and the Boston Breakers broke out for another high-scoring outing, and jumped into second place Wednesday night with the win over Atlanta.
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
In a game with tons of playoff implications for both clubs, the Boston Breakers (10-7-5, 35 points) were able to jump into second place in the WPS table with its 3-1 win over the Atlanta Beat (5-12-5, 20 points) on Wednesday night at KSU Soccer Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.
Atlanta, with the loss, became the second team to be eliminated from post-season contention, sitting eight points behind Washington for the final playoff spot with two games remaining.
Boston jumped into second after the Chicago Red Stars held on to beat the Philadelphia Independence, 2-0, in Illinois Wednesday night.
First Half
It didn't take long for Boston to get its first shot at the Beat goal. In the opening minute, Kelly Smith fired a shot at Hope Solo, but the U.S. national keeper made the stop.
Smith had another rip at Solo from distance, but the Beat keeper again got the best of the English international in the ninth minute.
Three minutes later, the Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher was tested with three straight shots.
First, Monica Ocampo took a shot that Naeher punched away; Lori Chalupny followed that shot with no success; and Eniola Aluko, the Beat's leading scorer got the final of the opportunities and was stopped.
Smith finally figured out how to beat Solo -- by assisting one of her team-mates.
In the 22nd minute, Smith sent a ball to Lindsay Tarpley who gave the Breakers a 1-0 lead by beating Solo to the lower 90.
Eleven minutes after Tarpley put the Breakers on top, Jordan Angeli opened up a two-goal lead for the Breakers. Amy LePeilbet set up the rookie of the year candidate, who beat Solo for her seventh goal of the season.
Second Half
Just seconds into the second 45, Kristine Lilly extended the Breakers lead to three goals, beating Solo in the 46th minute for a 3-0 lead.
After the Lilly goal to open the half, there was little to be said about action on either side of the ball. It wasn't until after the hour point of the match where someone made a play.
Twenty minutes after Lilly's nail-in-the-coffin goal, Atlanta began to try to mount a comeback. In the 65th minute, Aluko blasted one past Naeher, high up the middle of the target, after receiving a pass from Aya Miyama, to cut the lead to 3-1.
But that was the only real chance Atlanta could muster up in the second half.
Boston, led by their unsung defensive force LePeilbet, shut down all Beat chances in the final 25 minutes, and the expansion club was officially eliminated from playoff contention.
