    Joe Hart

Was given nothing to do in the opening half an hour save for a single punch, with his defenders keeping Barca at bay despite their possession. Eventually sprung into action to deny Xavi's rocket from 30 yards, diving to deny the midfielder. Could do little to Messi's penalty but conceded through his legs for Barca's second.

    Vincent Kompany

The City captain was the most vocal presence on the pitch throughout, marshalling his team-mates through sustained early pressure with aplomb. A true leader's performance.

  • Pablo Zabaleta

    Pablo Zabaleta

Energetic from the off, linking up with Negredo on the right flank as City attacked Jordi Alba. Stayed on his feet to maintain the threat of the former Valencia man and Iniesta in a mature defensive showing.

  • Aleksandar Kolarov

    Aleksandar Kolarov

Was a surprise starter in midfield for Pellegrini and provided plenty of industry, if little invention on the left hand side. Picked up a booking for a dangerous challenge on Busquets.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Plucked a floating cross-field ball from Fabregas out of the air with expert timing early on and overlapped Kolarov well. Had the beating of Davi Alves on the counter-attack in an impressive display.

  • Martín Demichelis

Martín Demichelis Flop of the Match

Trusted by his manager to provide an experienced head at the back in place of Joleon Lescott but started nervously, giving away possession out of defence. Never looked fully comfortable despite some brave heading and was foolish in bringing down Messi, picking up deserved red card in the process.

  • Jesús Navas González

    Jesús Navas González

Didn't provide a lot of cover for Zabaleta when his full-back was under pressure but looked threatening on the occasional counter. Struggled to get on the ball enough to prove a consistent threat and was largely out of the game. Gave the ball away in the build-up to the penalty.

  • David Silva

    David Silva

Nearly played Negredo in with a sublime through ball 20 minutes in but his compatriot failed to capitalise. Looked to help his side at the back but was a little off the pace.

  • Fernandinho

    Fernandinho

Brought back into the side after after three games out with a thigh injury and proved his worth after as many minutes, muscling Messi off the ball. A typically powerful display from the Brazilian who was absolutely dominant at times.

  • Yaya Touré

    Yaya Touré

Took a little while to get going in midfield as the visitors controlled possession but broke showed glimpses of his devastating attacking potential, powering through the centre of mifield.

  • Negredo

    Negredo

Had 5 goals in only 3 home Champions League games already this term and was City's only real outlet for much of the first half. Grew frustrated with what he deemed as theatrics from the visitors, picking up a yellow card and was later replaced by Dzeko.

    Joleon Lescott

Replaced Kolarov following Demichelis' second half red card and looked to play the ball out of the back. A solid cameo.

    Samir Nasri

Came on for the ineffective Navas shortly before the hour mark and looked busy, forcing a block out of Pique.

    Edin Dzeko

Was brought on as City chased the game but couldn't finish his chances late on, with Valdes in inspired form.

  • Víctor Valdés

    Víctor Valdés

Dealt terribly with a high ball into his box shortly before the 20-minute mark but was saved by the referee after Negredo's foul. Was shaky on crosses but proved quick off his line and alert throughout, saving superbly from Silva's 77th minute volley and stopped a late City barrage.

  • Piqué

    Piqué

Was dominant in the air as he looked to protect his partner Mascherano and proved strong against Negredo when called upon. A mature display.

  • Jordi Alba

    Jordi Alba

Struggled to attack Zabaleta as much as he would have liked and spent much of the first half isolated on the left flank. Solid at the back when the Argentine attacked, however.

  • Daniel Alves

    Daniel Alves

Picked up a booking 23 minutes in for a rash challenge on the advancing Clichy and was pulled out of position far too often by the Frenchman. Wasted a gilt-edged chance to double his side's lead before making up for it with a late strike to break City hearts.

  • Cesc Fàbregas

Cesc Fàbregas Top of the Match

Maintained possession superbly as Barca slowly worked their way through the gears in midfield and picked out a number of wonderful balls to split the City defence. A genuine danger for the entire match.

  • Xavi

    Xavi

It comes as no surprise these days but the Barca skipper simply doesn't give the ball away. The 34-year-old dictated the pace of the game from the middle of the park. Let rip with a thunderous effort on the 32nd minute but was denied by the flying Hart. Should have done better with an inside the area 66 minutes in.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

Was deployed wide on the left by Tata Martino but typically drifted inside to load Barca's midfield and keep hold of the ball as the visitors looked to see out the win.

  • Javier Mascherano

    4.00

    Javier Mascherano

Had a titanic tussle with Negredo and more than stood up to City's beastly striker. Was first to almost every ball played into Barca's final third and distributed it superbly out of the back.

  • Busquets

    Busquets

Kept the ball well but was a little slow on the turn when City countered. Looked comfortable as the home side went down to 10 men, breaking up their possession in midfield.

  • Alexis Sánchez

    Alexis Sánchez

The Chilean was terribly wasteful early on, breaking up the Catalans' early momentum in the final third and did little to threaten the hosts up top. Rightly brought off late on.

  • Messi

    Messi

Was muscled off the ball by Fernandinho early on and blazed over with his side's first shot on goal after a half an hour. However, the Argentine atoned with a lightning quick run to win his side a penalty, which he converted with typical class and calm.
