Needed all of his defensive skills up against the trickery of Gotze. Caught out a couple of times when diving in for challenges in the first half.
A powerful performance from the Manchester United man in central defence. Stayed tight to Kruse.
Played with energy up and down the right but his passing was often sloppy and misplaced.
Made some strong challenges and interceptions, particularly when England dropped deep, although could have covered Cole better on the left.
Some nice link-up play and ball control from the Southampton man on his second international appearance.
Caused Germany problems with his quick and direct dribbling, although his final ball was rather inconsistent. Certainly gave the visitors something to think about and hit the post with a low strike from 30 yards.
Kept England ticking along in the first half with precise passing and good pressing off the ball. Replaced by Liverpool team-mate Henderson in the 56th minute.
Flop of the Match
The Manchester United midfielder worked hard but was ponderous and ineffective in possession. Replaced by Wilshere in the 64th minute.
Found himself in some good positions but made poor choices in the final third as he played with his head down. Far too selfish and his attitude seemed poor.
Linked up the play well in the first half without ever getting in positions to trouble the Germany goal. Replaced by Barkley with 20 minutes left.
Came on for Cole in the 53rd minute. Ball-watched too much defensively but got in some decent crosses at the other end.
Came on for Gerrard in the 56th minute. Full of running but found it difficult as Germany controlled the game.

The Arsenal defender wore the armband for Germany and put them ahead with a lovely glancing header, just moments after forcing Hart into a great save from a similar position. Solid defensively.
Made one very powerful run into the penalty box in the first 45 minutes and was always composed as he sat in midfield.
Top of the Match
Some moments of real quality from the Bayern Munich forward, not least his lovely cross for Mertesacker's goal. Trickery, dribbling and tactical positioning were all excellent - and was only denied a goal by Hart's superb save.
Always a danger in the final third but will feel that he could have done more to hurt the England defence. Shot too close to Hart when well placed early in the second period.
Showed impressive defensive positioning to deny Rooney space between the lines and progressive passing to start attacks.
Flitted in and out of the game before dropping into a deeper role in the second half, from where he dictated the tempo.
