Live Commentary

  • Anyway, that'll be all from me, Sam Wells. Thanks for following today's game with me; I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Until next time, farewell!
  • Roberto Martinez, meanwhile, will be wondering how his team failed to win that game. They, without question, dominated in the opening period and, ultimately, their inability to extend their lead in that 45 minutes proved costly. The former Wigan boss will also be rueing Coleman's late miss as anything could have happened if they had forced extra time. However, regardless of the result, there were promising signs there for the Everton manager, particularly in the form of Deulofeu - it will be no surprise if he features heavily in Everton's season after this evening's game.
  • In what was most certainly, to use that old chestnut, a game of two halves, Fulham came out on top and Jol will be delighted that his side managed to claim a win, particularly after a categorically dire first half. Their second-half showing, in stark contrast to the first, showed fight, guile and promise as his side appeared galvanised following the break. The Dutchman will be delighted that his team managed to progress but, perhaps even more pertinently, he will hope that they can use this performance as a platform from which they can build in the league.
  • 90' + 4'
It's pandemonium in the Fulham area but Everton are unable to capitalise and the Cottagers have secured a 2-1 win! Given the tone of the first half, that is a truly incredible turnaround from Jol's men!
  • 90' + 3'
Robles pumps another ball long after Fulham manage to waste more time - it looks as though that spurned Coleman chance might be the defining moment of this encounter.
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow Card John Stones
  • 90' + 2'
Karagounis is fouled, for what feels like the umpteenth time this game, and Fulham are awarded a free kick in a dangerous area. Karagounis strikes at goal but Robles claims well, instantly setting Everton away on the counter attack.
  • 90' + 1'
Kacaniklic earns a corner off the body of Stones as they appear to be doing a good job of seeing out this tie.
  • 90'
Karagounis strikes speculatively from distance - it appears a rash decision but it gets a deflection, earning Fulham a corner and, perhaps more importantly, more time to eat up.
  • 89'
That initially looked like an excellent save from Stockdale but it was actually heading wide anyway; that miss could prove oh-so-costly for the away side.
  • 88'
That is a shocking miss from Coleman! Despite being presented with an open goal courtesy of yet more sterling work from Mirallas, the full back can't find the target, striking into the body of the flailing Stockdale at the far post.
  • 87'
Barry provides some relief for the home side with an overhit ball aimed at Coleman. The ball runs out for a throw, much to Fulham's undoubted relief.
  • 86'
Mirallas almost provides the equaliser with another dangerous cross but Stockdale does well to tip the ball away from danger. Hangeland completes the clearance but this is desperate stuff from the home side.
  • 85'
Fulham are sitting back now, clearly intent on soaking up the pressure as they look to see out this third round tie. Bent's continually being caught offside is not particularly helping their cause, however, as he gifts Everton yet another free kick.
  • 84'
    Yellow Card James McCarthy
  • 83'
Barry is fouled by Kasami and Everton work the ensuing free kick well, almost managing to play in Oviedo down the left. Zverotic does well though, tackling and putting the ball out for a throw-in.
  • 82'
Everton continue to push but Fulham receive some respite in the form of a Phil Jagielka foul on Darren Bent as the Cottagers attempted to counter.
  • 81'
The powerful figure of Lukaku goes close to embarrassing Stockdale and providing an equaliser! Receiving the ball from Barry, the Belgian turned on the ball before striking with real venom from the edge of the area. Stockdale allows it to worm through his grasp but claims the ball with his second attempt - that was a close one!
  • 80'
    SubstitutionSteven Naismith Kevin Mirallas
  • 80'
Mirallas, just on for Naismith, runs at Hangeland and almost manages to work an opening for Lukaku! He plays it inside but the Belgian can't quite manage to divert the ball goalwards.
  • 79'
    Yellow Card Seamus Coleman
  • 79'
Deulofeu, though quieter in this second half, has showed his potential in this game and he almost managed to show it even more by providing an equaliser just now! Nimble footwork allows him to step inside two challenges, working his way into the box before striking for the opposite corner. The effort is just wide but that was lovely from the Barcelona loanee.
  • 78'
Berbatov, who's definitely come into the game more and more as it's wore on, does well in a deeper area than usual, earning his side a free kick, much to the behest of a now-booked Seamus Coleman.
  • 76'
Berbatov almost manages to make it three! Kasami whips in a lovely ball to the back post - one that earns the rarely doled out respect of the Bulgarian himself - but the striker is unable to bring the ball under his control. It was a nigh-on impossible cross to control but a nice idea nonetheless - Fulham really have been impressive this half.
  • 75'
Naismith is left nursing a sore head after an aerial challenge with Stockdale leaves him floored. He gets up and trots back to his position eventually but remains evidently dazed.
  • 74'
Lukaku gets forward really well, driving on with the ball at the backtracking Fulham defence before playing a deft backheel into the path of Naismith. The Scot isn't, however, quite alert to the Belgian's quick thinking and he makes a hash of the first touch, knocking it out for a goal kick.
  • 73'
Coleman is inches away from equalising! Deulofeu, who has endured an altogether quieter half, crosses a ball in to the box, only for it to be deflected to the far post by Hangeland. The Welshman is there, however, and meets it on the half volley with a sweet strike. It whistles just wide of the far post, however, and the chance goes begging.
  • 71'
Fulham continue to push, despite scoring that second as Bent almost finds himself in on goal again, only to be denied by the linesman's flag. Everton are living dangerously here.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionDarron Gibson Phil Jagielka
  • 69'
    SubstitutionJohn Heitinga Gareth Barry
  • 67'
    Goal Darren Bent
And Fulham capitalise on that free kick! GOAL! Karagounis surprises everyone with a quick free kick played to the withdrawn Bent. Bent, however, isn't surprised, taking a touch before slamming home with his left foot. A sharp finish and one that signals an astonishing turnaround given Everton's dominance in the first half.
  • 66'
Amorebieta, getting forward in that unfamiliar left back berth, crosses towards Bent but the danger is averted by Distin. Parker picks up the rebound and is duly brought down by Gibson, giving Fulham an opportunity in the form of a free kick in a dangerous area.
  • 66'
Parker, just a minute after Bent's arrival, looks to play in the England international and almost does so, only to be prevented by the substitute's poor first touch. The striker attempts to make up for it but Robles claims the ball at his feet.
  • 65'
    SubstitutionAdel Taarabt Darren Bent
  • 65'
Darren Bent replaces Taarabt as Fulham, presumably, look to go two up top as Jol appears keen to capitalise on that early second half equaliser.
  • 64'
    SubstitutionJ. Riise Amorebieta
  • 64'
Gibson crosses a free kick to the back post and Amorebieta's attempted clearance falls to the feet of McCarthy. McCarthy strikes at goal but his effort is blocked by his own man, Heitinga getting his body in the way and inadvertently averting the danger for the home side.
  • 62'
The Venezuelan Amorebieta replaces Riise for Fulham, perhaps to deal with the threat of Deulofeu.
  • 61'
Fulham have a golden opportunity to get their second! After dispossessing the Everton defence deep in their own half, Parker runs at the Toffees before slipping in Berbatov. The Bulgarian, who, as it turns out, was offside anyway, fluffs his lines however, striking well wide of the near post.
  • 60'
Everton continue to press but their pressure appears slightly less threatening than in the first half. Or, perhaps, Fulham are better equipped to deal with it. Either way, they have yet to get much out of the Cottagers' defence in this second period.
  • 58'
That goal seems to have sparked a response from the away side as Everton have resumed their dominance from the first half. They are unable to capitalise in this particular instance, however, as Heitinga's eventual cross is gathered with ease by Stockdale.
  • 56'
The Toffees attempt to respond quickly as Stones' cross is deflected behind for a corner. Deulofeu plays the ensuing corner to the edge of the area and Gibson is there to meet it. The former Manchester United man's effort is deflected behind for another corner.
  • 55'
Though Fulham did deserve it on the basis of the opening ten minutes of this half, Everton must be rueing their inability to take any of the surfeit of chances that fell their way in the first period.
  • 54'
    Goal D. Berbatov
GOAL! And it's Dimitar Berbatov! Despite enduring a difficult game thus far, the Bulgarian makes no mistake after a deflection fell his way in the area, placing the ball neatly inside the near post after Stones' tackle on Taarabt fell his way. A nice finish and no less than Fulham deserve after their strong start to the half.
  • 52'
There's a brief hold up in play as Lukaku, somehow, manages to lose a shinpad. His length attempts to reinstall them incite jeers from the home crowd, clearly keen to maintain their side's gathering momentum.
  • 51'
Another half chance for Fulham and, again, it falls to Kacaniklic! Zverotiv chips a deep ball to the far post and Kasami wins it in the air, knocking the ball across the area to the winger. He takes it first time on the volley but miscues his strike, sending the ball across the face of the goal.
  • 50'
There appears to be much more purpose in Fulham's player after the half-time break as Berbatov heads another effort over the bar. That was never in danger of going in but the intent is there and, evidently, much stronger than in their limp first-half display.
  • 49'
Kacaniklic almost equalises! In what was comfortably Fulham's best move of the half, Kasami played in the wing who turned and twisted before striking at goal. Robles does well to divert the ball wide of the goal but that was nice play from the youngster.
  • 48'
Chance for Kasami! Parker picks out a lovely pass as he plays the ball infield to Taarabt, who duly runs at the Everton defence before playing left to the midfielder. His effort is deflected clear but that was much improved from the home side.
  • 47'
Everton have started the half in unconvincing fashion as Distin miscues a clearance woefully, putting the ball out of play for a throw-in in the process.
  • 46'
And Everton get us underway once more! Let's see if their opposition can prove more of a contest for their adversaries in this second period.
  • The teams are back out on the pitch now as we are minutes away from the resumption of play at Craven Cottage!
  • Roberto Martinez, meanwhile, will be both delighted and disappointed with his men. He will feel the former due to their practically relentless dominance in that first period, the fact that they enjoyed virtually all of the chances and the scintillating display of a certain Barcelona loanee. The latter emotion, however, will also be foremost in his thoughts as he will be wondering how they haven't managed to put the game out of their opposition's reach. He will be keen to do so in the second half and, if they continue in the same vein, it's difficult to envisage them not doing as such.
  • Fulham will most definitely be disappointed with their first-half showing; they struggled to get a foothold on the game from the off as the various threats that Everton pose, particularly in the form of Deulofeu, caused them a multitude of problems throughout. The only positive point Jol can realistically take from that half is the fact that they somehow managed to keep the score down to a one goal deficit. That and, possibly, the fact that they enjoyed greater spells of possession as the half went on, albeit with little sign of threatening the Everton goal.
  • 45' + 1'
And the referee brings an end to a lively first half! The fact that the whistle prompts a chorus of boos from the home support probably tells you all you need to know about that opening half - Everton go in 1-0 up at the break.
  • 45'
Berbatov has a decent effort from the edge of the area, catching the ball nicely but, unfortunately for the Bulgarian, Robles is well-positioned and claims the ball with consummate ease.
  • 44'
Deulofeu is, once more, the man to spring a counter attack after another Fulham spell of possession breaks down. He uses his pace to get deep into the Cottagers' half but Hangeland tackles really well to prevent a shooting opportunity for the dangerous winger.
  • 43'
Fulham are enjoying another strong spell, though they still show little sign of breaking down the Everton ranks, having to resort to potshots from distance.
  • 42'
Karagounis is the man to whip in the ensuing free kick but he crosses tamely into Robles' arms. A disappointing delivery.
  • 41'
Fulham earn a free kick in a dangerous position after Naismith brings down Karagounis, also igniting the ire of the fiery veteran in the process.
  • 40'
Hangeland, in a manner completely unbefitting of both his stature and his perceived strengths, nutmegs Heitinga before spraying the ball out to the right wing. The cross is eventually too strong from Zverotic but that at least was a nice moment for the Fulham support.
  • 38'
Deulofeu is proving himself to be a real handful out there; the winger picks up a ball from Lukaku and immediately looks to run at Riise. He takes one step to his right before striking towards the far corner with some venom. His effort is deflected behind for a corner but Fulham look unable to cope with the Barcelona loanee.
  • 36'
Fulham retain possession fairly comfortably on the edge of the area, eventually finding Taarabt on the left of the penalty area. The Moroccan, in inimitable fashion, cuts inside and attempts to curl it into the opposite corner. It's a poor effort though and it sails way over the crossbar.
  • 35'
    Yellow Card Darron Gibson
  • 35'
In a moment symptomatic of Fulham's first half, Karagounis works himself a good crossing opportunity but gets the cross all wrong. He attempted to find Berbatov at the back post but, instead, found the stands.
  • 34'
Gibson is booked after a late challenge on Karagounis; probably deserved, though the Greek certainly made the most of it.
  • 33'
Riise, who has yet to score in his Fulham career, strikes well over after Taarabt set him up on the edge of the area. Nothing more than a half chance but a disappointing finish nonetheless.
  • 32'
Everton counter after Fulham lose possession and their attempts at a counter are considerably better than their opposition's, almost ending in a goal! Deulofeu played in Lukaku who, in typical fashion used his pace and power to get into the box before striking across the goal. Stockdale just about managed to get down, however, and palmed the ball away.
  • 31'
Taarabt, intermittently bright in this half, shimmies on the edge of the Everton half, working himself a shooting opportunity. His finish isn't the best, however, and the Everton defence clear the ball with a fair amount of ease.
  • 29'
After Everton lose possession, Fulham look to surge forward on the counter. Despite some nice initial interplay, Kacaniklic eventually wastes the opportunity, misplacing his pass as the danger passes.
  • 28'
Deulofeu continues to cause problems as the winger goes on another mazy run, eventually setting up another chance for Naismith. He managed to find another good position but, again, his finish was found wanting as he struck into the side netting.
  • 27'
Fulham's strong spell continues as Parker almost manages to find Kacaniklic in a dangerous position but the winger's touch is heavy and it runs through to Robles.
  • 26'
More promising signs for Fulham as Zverotic flashes an effort wide of the far post! It was always heading wide but the Cottagers look as though they're growing in confidence.
  • 25'
Fulham earn a corner from Karagounis' hard work and they almost manage to capitalise on this rare opportunity! The Greek takes the corner and it's Berbatov who gets his head on it. The header is always heading over but that's better from the Cottagers - although, in all honesty, it's difficult to get any worse than Fulham's opening 25 minutes.
  • 24'
Everton retain the possession at the back as Fulham look, quite simply, happy for the respite. The Toffee's pressure in this first half has been practically relentless; they will be keen to add to their lead before the half-time interval.
  • 23'
Everton continue to dominate proceedings as they have two half chances in quick succession. First of all, Lukaku heads down for Naismith, whose shot is blocked by Hangeland. Deulofeu, once again, picks up the rebound, however, and wreaks havoc in the Fulham box. He steps past two as though they weren't there, before Senderos finally intervenes to prevent a shooting opportunity.
  • 22'
Berbatov appears to be through on goal after a lovely through ball from the enigmatic Taarabt but, alas, the offside flag is raised and the Bulgarian is halted in his tracks.
  • 21'
Another corner prompts more action in the Fulham box as it's Heitinga, this time around, who diverts the cross over the bar.
  • 20'
From the resulting corner, it's Distin again who looks to trouble the Fulham goal! His header is touched wide by Zverotic, though it might have been heading wide anyway.
  • 19'
Deulofeu, making a mockery of Riise thus far, causes the left back further problems, earning a corner for his side after some more nimble footwork on the wing.
  • 18'
From the ensuing corner, Distin, of all people, receives the ball on the edge of the area, swivels on it and strikes goalwards. Unfortunately, and perhaps predictably, his effort flies high and wide of the Fulham goal.
  • 17'
Coleman does well down the right to outpace the hitherto hapless John Arne Riise, before his resulting cross is cleared behind for a corner by Hangeland.
  • 16'
    Yellow Card Scott Parker
  • 16'
Fulham look to combat Everton's increasing dominance and they almost manage it! Zverotic flashes a cross into the area and Berbatov attempts to flick the ball into the far corner. It's just wide of the post but that was close!
  • 14'
Fulham force an unconvincing save out of Robles as the goalkeeper palms away a cross from Karagounis. That leads to a winding run from Deulofeu who, under the close attention of Parker, runs the length of the pitch before finally being crowded out. A lovely run and Parker's cynical attempts to halt him earn the Englishman a booking.
  • 11'
    Goal Steven Naismith
GOAL! And it's Steven Naismith! It's third time lucky for the Scot after Deulofeu played the Scot in with a lovely through ball. Riise played him on and, unlike the two opportunities minutes beforehand, Naismith made no mistake this time, striking past Stockdale with aplomb at the near post. An excellent run and finish but Fulham were lax there defensively. 1-0!
  • 10'
Naismith has another opportunity! And, really, it was all down to Lukaku once again. The striker turned Hangeland with ease before playing the diminutive midfielder in behind the Fulham defence. Naismith failed to capitalise on the chance, however, striking straight at the advancing Stockdale. He should have done better there.
  • 9'
Kasami gives away the ball and Gibson sets away Naismith down the left with a good pass. The Scot attempts to dink the ball into Lukaku but Hangeland is there to intervene, averting the danger with his head.
  • 8'
Everton continue to enjoy the lion's share of possession but they've yet to really forge a clear opening. Lukaku attempts to make something happen but Oviedo, curiously, halts his run and the targetman's pass runs through to Stockdale in the Fulham goal.
  • 7'
Heitinga takes a speculative effort from distance after some characteristically excellent hold-up play from Lukaku. The shot is deflected by Parker, however, and dribbles tamely into Stockdale's arms.
  • 6'
Karagounis attempts to release Kacaniklic down the right but his pass is intercepted by Oviedo. A decent idea, it just needs to be better executed for the Cottagers.
  • 5'
The first chance of the game and it falls to Naismith! Oviedo crosses from the left wing but the Scot can only direct the ball into the arms of Stockdale. Nothing more than a half chance but promising signs for the away side.
  • 4'
Deloufeu, on loan from Barcelona and seemingly a hot prospect, does well down the right wing but his driven cross is deflected clear by the Everton defence.
  • 3'
Parker does well in the middle, spraying around a series of nice passes, only for Zverotic to waste the spell of possession with a stray pass.
  • 2'
It's a low key start to this one as both sides look to sound out their opponents. Heitinga, operating in the centre of midfield today, brings down Kasami in the middle of the park.
  • 1'
And Fulham get this Capital One Cup Third Round tie underway!
  • The teams are both out on the pitch now as we are minutes away from kick off here at Craven Cottage.
  • Everton, meanwhile, make even more changes than their opposition this evening as Tim Howard, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley are among the various players rested from their 3-2 win at West Ham, with Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy both awarded their full Everton debuts.
  • Fulham make a host of changes from the side that lost 2-0 to Chelsea as talisman Dimitar Berbatov returns from injury to replace Darren Bent upfront, while Giorgios Karagounis, Adel Taarabt, Elsad Zverotic, John Arne Riise and Phillipe Senderos also come in for Sascha Riether, Fernando Amorebieta, Kieran Richardson, Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell.
  • Everton: Robles; Coleman, Heitinga, Distin, Stones; Oviedo, McCarthy, Gibson, Deulofeu; Naismith; Lukaku. Subs: Howard, Baines, Jagielka, Mirallas, Barry, Barkley, Jelavic.
  • Fulham: Stockdale; Zverotic, Hangeland, Senderos, Riise; Taarabt, Karagounis, Parker, Kacaniklic; Kasami; Berbatov. Subs: Etheridge, Riether, Amorebieta, Sidwell, Mesca, Rodallega, Bent.
  • And here come the team line-ups...
  • The two sides facing one another today enter this game coming off the back of considerably different starts to the season; Fulham sit in the relegation zone, having managed a paltry four points from their opening fixtures, while Everton remain the only unbeaten side in the league following their 3-2 comeback against West Ham on Saturday. Still, this is the cup and Martin Jol will be hopeful that a win tonight against a potentially weakened Everton side could provide exactly the kickstart that their season was in desperate need of. Whether Roberto Martinez's man will play the role of the fall guys, however, remains to be seen. This could be an intriguing encounter!
  • Good evening and welcome to live coverage of tonight's Capital One Cup clash between Fulham and Everton, I'm Sam Wells and I'll be guiding you through tonight's proceedings.
