Live Commentary

  • That wraps up our coverage for another Tyne-Wear derby, although it was like going back in time to last season - with the exact same result! Sorry Newcastle fans and congratulations Sunderland supporters. I've been Tim Poole, thanks for reading!
  • Jack Colback (who deserved his goal after a fantastic performance) made absolutely sure of the points late on - and the Newcastle supporters visibly demonstrated their displeasure.
  • That's that - a 3-0 win sends Sunderland as high as 12th in the Premier League, only four places behind Newcastle. The writing was on the wall when Fabio Borini scored an early penalty, before Adam Johnson converted a penalty minutes later.
  • FULL-TIME! The boos ring out at St. James' Park as Sunderland win 3-0 here at Newcastle for the second season running!
  • 90' + 2'
CHALLENGE! Bardsley produces a great tackle to deny Sissoko at the last minute, before he can unleash a shot after an encouraging run. The Newcastle midfielder hasn't shown much of that today, though, and nor have any of his team-mates. This has been quite comprehensive from Poyet's side.
  • 90' + 1'
There will be three minutes of injury time, as Mannone reacts well to a deflected Sylvain Marveuax shot. It goes off for a corner, which is played in by Ben Arfa and not cleared initially by O'Shea. However, Ben Arfa's second ball into the box is caught easily by Mannone.
  • 90'
STAT ATTACK: 3 - Sunderland have scored three or more goals in consecutive league games at St James' Park for the first time since 1919.
  • 89'
    SubstitutionFabio Borini Craig Gardner
  • 89'
The stewards are at the ready for the final whistle, meanwhile. They sense an anger amongst the home fans - and we've already had one or two pitch invasions so far.
  • 88'
Are the Newcastle fans leaving early? It looks that way - and they may as well have gone home after the second goal went in, in truth. Sunderland have looked good value ever since they opened the scoring with a Borini penalty.
  • 87'
    Yellow Card Paul Dummett
  • 86'
WOW! Larsson was almost clean through after a long ball was played up to the midfielder. However, Krul surged off his line to clear the ball - he was in No Man's Land! Imagine a fourth here, the home fans would not react too kindly.
  • 84'
And this will be Sunderland's first Tyne-Wear derby double since the 1960s. History has well and truly been made.
  • 82'
The Newcastle fans are not happy; Alan Pardew is not happy; Mike Ashley must be worried. But what a day for Sunderland. Colback, Johnson and Borini, in particular, have been fantastic today.
  • 80'
    Assist Fabio Borini
  • 80'
    Goal Jack Colback
GOAL! And it is 3-0! Colback slots the ball into the back of the net, while a Newcastle fan throws a scarf onto the turf in disgust. Then a fan runs onto the pitch and waves his season ticket in front of Pardew!
  • 78'
CHANCE! Larsson has a chance on the half-volley but gets his shot all wrong as it goes off target. Surely there's no way back for Newcastle now? Meanwhile, some of their fans are demonstrating their feelings against owner Mike Ashley via chants and banners.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionAdam Johnson Sebastian Larsson
  • 75'
Adam Johnson is coming off! Sebastian Larsson his replacement. Johnson has been the man of the match so far, so we can assume this substitution is based on fitness or fatigue.
  • 74'
    SubstitutionVurnon Anita Sylvain Marveaux
  • 73'
On the break, the Magpies won a corner, demonstrating the end-to-end nature of this second half. In the end, however, it was cleared and nothing came of both sides' chances. Sunderland will want Altidore to be putting those chances away, though!
  • 72'
CHANCE! Altidore breaks free and tries to go around Krul when a direct shot looked the better option! He couldn't put the ball away and Newcastle then broke straight upfield!
  • 70'
Any hopes of a Newcastle comeback are slowly dying away with just 20 minutes to go. Despite an improved second-half performance, the Magpies have looked blunt in the final third today - and lacklustre in midfield. Never mind Cabaye, they are definitely missing the suspended Loic Remy.
  • 68'
STAT ATTACK: If Sunderland hold on for the three points here, they will have beaten Newcastle three times in a row, which would equal their club record.
  • 66'
POST!! Johnson now hits the post for Sunderland! What a turnaround as the former England winger shows tremendous skill to almost put the visitors 3-0 up, moments after Newcastle had almost clawed a goal back. Nearly a sensational moment from Johnson!
  • 65'
WIDE! From the resulting corner, Shola Ameobi heads just wide! He was unmarked and should have done better - but the ball seemed to hit the side of his head and off it went for a goal kick! Two chances in quick succession for the Magpies there. Is it just not their day?
  • 64'
    SubstitutionDavide Santon Paul Dummett
  • 64'
SAVE! Mannone produces a fantastic save from a shot that looked to be heading for the top corner! There was a lot more final product from Newcastle there.
  • 63'
POOR! Tiote sends a high ball into Taylor - but it goes straight off for a goal kick. The Sunderland fans celebrate cheekily. Newcastle's final product has been distinctly lacking so far today. Is it psychological more than anything for them against the Black Cats at the moment?
  • 61'
Good play from Newcastle now, as Brown is forced to head it in behind for a corner. An end-to-end half here, much like the first half started - before Sunderland scored twice, of course.
  • 59'
WIDE! Colback almost gets himself on the scoresheet with a ferocious low shot! Sunderland could have made it 3-0 there but it wasn't to be, although you sense their midfielders will keep pushing on. As mentioned already, Colback specifically has been superb today!
  • 57'
TACKLE! De Jong is played in in the box and John O'Shea manages to get a brilliant tackle in to stop the Dutch forward! Cheick Tiote follows up on the rebound but his shot can't trouble the Sunderland goalkeeper.
  • 56'
If Sunderland score one more, however, that will be a total of six in their last two games at St. James' Park. A goal either way looks likely at this stage.
  • 55'
Ben Arfa has been Newcastle's creative hub so far this half but it remains to be seen whether he can get his side back into this one. Just one goal is all it will take...
  • 53'
It's definitely been a lively second half here - and that won't suit Sunderland. As long as they can keep the hosts at bay, though, they could be several places higher by the end of today than they were pre-match.
  • 52'
PENALTY APPEALS! Several challenges come in at once, as Debuchy, Ameobi and Sissoko all seem to go down after strong tackles. At least one of them was in the box but the referee waved play on!
  • 50'
Not on this occasion, as Sunderland defend well and launch themselves straight upfield for a counterattack and win a corner. The set-piece comes to nothing, though, and another frantic start to a half is stopped for a pause for breath.
  • 49'
A lot of pressure from Newcastle now, in fact, as the hosts start the second half much like they started the first. Will they be able to get a goal this time, however?
  • 48'
Early free kick! Shola Ameobi won it after a foul from Bridcutt. It looks as though the hosts have moved to a traditional 4-4-2 formation.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionSammy Ameobi Luuk de Jong
  • 46'
We're off for the second half! Sammy Ameobi has made way for Newcastle at half-time. His replacement is Luuk de Jong, the Magpies' new signing. However, he hasn't scored in 14 appearances in Germany this season...
  • From that point onwards, it was a steep uphill battle for the home side. And it looks like being more of the same after the break. Can Alan Pardew get his side back into this one? Stay with us for more after half-time.
  • You can understand why, as the hosts have looked empty without Yohan Cabaye in their midfield. They started well enough, especially in terms of energy, but Sunderland hit them with a quick-fire double, as a Fabio Borini penalty and Adam Johnson finish put them 2-0 ahead.
  • The half-time whistle was greeted with so many boos from the Newcastle fans.
  • HALF-TIME: Newcastle United 0-2 Sunderland
  • 45' + 1'
Another free kick to Sunderland! Sissoko gives this one away. Brown lumps it upfield but those at the other end do not look too keen on the chance, as the ball rolls off for a goal kick. Both sides look keen to simply take this to the break.
  • 45'
There will be two minutes of added time, with the Newcastle fans jeering at that particular announcement.
  • 43'
Sammy Ameobi does better, to pass it to Santon, though the Frenchman is again at fault as Alonso easily cuts out his delivery. But history repeats itself, as the hosts win the ball back and Shola Ameobi sends the ball way over the bar!
  • 42'
A lacklustre half is slowly coming to an end for the home side - but they are hardly growing into the occasion. Shola Ameobi's most recent contribution is a weak shot that does not trouble Mannone at all. Once again, Sunderland are completely in control.
  • 40'
Could Cabaye's departure be affecting the Magpies already? It will probably take them a few games to get used to life without his consistent playmaking from midfield.
  • 39'
SAVE! Krul saves from Altidore after Alonso and Borini combined to give him a lot of space in front of goal. It was Debuchy who originally lost the ball to Alonso, with the Frenchman, just like Santon, hardly enjoying his best half in a Newcastle shirt today.
  • 37'
Anita now misplaces a pass that goes straight towards Mannone. The Magpies' early energy has all but disappeared now. Sunderland look well in control and it looks as though Pardew's half-time team-talk will be vital if his team are to have any chance this afternoon.
  • 35'
ANGER! Steven Taylor makes a great clearance but Colback lunges in to fould him thereafter. Taylor reacts with a lot of anger - but towards the referee. That kind of reaction won't help his side...
  • 33'
HEADER! Provider turns finisher now as Alonso crosses the ball into Johnson, who seems to be everywhere at the moment. The winger - not famed for his headers - sends the ball well wide, however.
  • 31'
    Yellow Card Davide Santon
YELLOW CARD! Santon is booked for a foul on Johnson now, capping a poor half an hour for the Newcastle left-back. He's had chances to score and chances to feed his opponents in good positions. Overall, though, he just hasn't delivered so far.
  • 30'
However, Johnson tracks back and wins a free kick to stem the tide for the Black Cats. Has the former England winger been the man of the match so far? He's definitely been one of them - and "former England man" could soon change to current England man on this form.
  • 29'
More Newcastle pressure! Debuchy starts an attack that the Ameobi brothers are keen to continue. The Magpies end up throwing the kitchen sink at Sunderland, as a shot takes a deflection of Bridcutt and goes off for a corner.
  • 27'
BLOCK! Bardsley makes a brilliant block as the hosts look to get back into this. In fairness to them, the Magpies look to have responded the right way after their initial shock, although it is nothing but an uphill battle from here.
  • 25'
Suddenly, the hosts look shellshocked, as Sunderland boss possession in midfield. Colback, in particular, is looking instrumental in the middle of the park. Can Pardew's men get anything out of this first half? The match is slowly slipping away from them already.
  • 23'
    Goal Adam Johnson
GOAL! Adam Johnson makes it 2-0 for Sunderland! Newcastle fans are absolutely shocked here as Jozy Altidore storms forward and plays it to Colback, who forces a save from Krul - but Johnson is there to fire in on the rebound. What is it about Sunderland against the Magpies these days? Everything just seems to go their way!
  • 21'
    How can the Magpies respond?
  • 20'
    Yellow Card Fabio Borini
  • 19'
    Penalty Goal Fabio Borini
GOAL! A very cool finish from Borini as he slots the ball past Krul with consumate ease. He is booked for running into the Newcastle fans during his celebrations, however! There seemed to be no doubt about the penalty decision and Newcastle have paid the price.
  • 19'
PENALTY! Sunderland! Bardsley threatens again and it's Vurnon Anita who brings him down clumsily in the box! Borini to take this one...
  • 17'
CHEERS FROM THE HOME CROWD! Phil Bardsley has a shot from another free kick - but this one sails way over the bar! The former Manchester United man wasn't threatening Krul with that one, much to the delight of Magpies fans.
  • 15'
Hatem Ben Arfa and Santon almost threaten from a corner now! However, Santon again proves costly for Newcastle as he smashes his shot way over the bar. That doesn't hide the fact that it's been an even contest so far, although the hosts are starting to attack more and more.
  • 13'
And another free kick for the hosts! Given for handball. Santon looks to send this one into the box once again and does so into the near post. But the ball sails straight into the arms of Vito Mannone. Newcastle will have to do better than that!
  • 12'
    Yellow Card John O'Shea
  • 12'
A lot of pushing and shoving during that corner, meaning yet another free kick is given for Newcastle. It's hard to call a winner so far - but we have plenty of time left, of course!
  • 11'
Plenty of fouls and free kicks in the opening 10 or so minutes - neither side have wanted to give an inch so far. A corner to Sunderland now, meanwhile, as Mike Williamson clears a Colback cross into the near post.
  • 10'
Liam Bridcutt and Brown dally on the ball at the back now, as more pressure from the hosts almost catches them off guard. In fact, Newcastle do steal possession off them, although Sissoko is in an offside position when he is played in, meaning a pause for breath for the visitors.
  • 8'
BORINI! Johnson threatens again with a great run, followed by a superb ball into the box. Fabio Borini lunged to get onto the end of it but just missed out, as the ball rolled towards Tim Krul. Could Johnson hold the key for the Black Cats today?
  • 6'
A brilliant opening from both sides here, as Alonso now impresses at the back for his side to stop Sissoko from getting in behind. It's been high-paced and fiercely contested from both Newcastle and Sunderland so far. The crowd have not been shy to get involved, either!
  • 5'
HEADER! A free kick to Sunderland just now, though, with their first real chance to threaten so far. Adam Johnson played a superb ball into the box and it was full-back Marcos Alonso who got his head onto it, with the ball going just over. Could that even things up, momentum-wise?
  • 3'
GREAT START! The hosts have started superbly, with Moussa Sissoko now winning the ball in midfield and playing in Mathieu Debuchy. The Frenchman had a shot that went just wide. Sunderland are under severe pressure already here.
  • 2'
Speaking of which, Shola Ameobi is already pressing high, winning a free kick early on after troubling Wes Brown. Davide Santon whipped the set-piece in - badly - but Newcastle still almost benefitted, as Jack Colback made a poor clearance. All was okay, in the end, however.
  • 1'
And we're off! The crowd are absolutely up for this, while it's the first time two brothers have started for Newcastle against Sunderland since the 1950s (the Ameobis).
  • Things are looking much better for Newcastle now, though, with Pardew's side sitting in eighth, just three points off Manchester United in seventh. A win today would put them just six points off fourth-placed Liverpool, meaning a bid for a Champions League place is still not out of the question.
  • Go back slightly further - to the last time these sides met here at St. James' Park - and you have the fabulous 3-0 Sunderland victory over the Magpies. Those days are in the past, however, with then manager Paolo Di Canio nothing but a distant memory.
  • Poyet's side are currently out of the relegation zone, while a win could take them as high as 12th. They will certainly have good memories of their 2-1 triumph over Newcastle earlier in the season.
  • Sunderland subs: Larsson, Gardner, Wickham, Giaccherini, Vergini, Scocco, Ustari.
  • Newcastle subs: Elliot, Dummett, Haidara, Yanga-Mbiwa, Marveaux, Armstrong, De Jong.
  • Sunderland XI v Newcastle: Mannone; Bardsley, Brown, O'Shea, Alonso; Johnson, Bridcutt, Colback, Ki, Borini; Altidore.
  • Sunderland, meanwhile, looked close to letting club captain Lee Cattermole leave for Stoke City, although a deal did not seem to be concluded. Still, Cattermole has been left out of the Black Cats' line-up for today.
  • Newcastle XI v Sunderland: Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, S.Taylor, Santon; Tiote, Sissoko, Anita; Ben Arfa, Shola Ameobi, Sammy Ameobi.
  • The home side will have to do without Yohan Cabaye, who completed a January move to Paris Saint-Germain two days ago, but will still be hoping they have enough firepower to overcome Gus Poyet's relegation-threatened men.
  • Today's hosts, Newcastle, will be itching to set the score straight against their bitter rivals, with the Magpies not having won the last four Tyne-Weird derbies. Indeed, you have to go back to August 2011 for their last victory over Sunderland, who have won their last two Premier League clashes against Alan Pardew's side.
  • Good afternoon and welcome to live-text commentary of the Tyne-Wear derby! I'm your host Tim Poole and I'll be guiding you through all the action as Newcastle United take on Sunderland. A fierce clash no doubt awaits.
