Player Ratings: West Brom 1-1 Everton

Pepe Mel secured a point in his first game in charge at the Hawthorns as Diego Lugano cancelled out Kevin Mirallas' first-half opener

    Ben Foster

Could do little about Mirallas' low finish but had a quiet outing, particularly in the second half as Everton eased off.

  • Steven Reid

    2.50

    Steven Reid

A no-nonsense approach to defending was welcome in the first half as Everton kept up the pressure but as West Brom grew into the game, Reid provided a solid base for the hosts to build an attack.

  • Jonas Olsson

    2.50

    Jonas Olsson

Showed excellent awareness in the early stages to block two passes, both of which would have put Lukaku through on goal. Lost out on a header against the Belgian in the build-up to Everton's opener. Had a less lively 45 minutes after the break.

  • Liam Ridgewell

    2.50

    Liam Ridgewell

Kept his output simple and, apart from two early scares, kept Oviedo contained for the majority of the match. Booked for a cynical tug-back.

  • Diego Lugano

    2
    2.50

    Diego Lugano

Was at fault for the game's opening goal as he switched off to allow Mirallas to score but brought the crowd to life in the 75th minute with a firm header at Howard's near post.

  • Claudio Yacob

    2.50

    Claudio Yacob

Patrolled in front of West Brom's back four and kept his passing simple where possible. Found himself overrun in the first half as Everton constantly broke forward but the pressure on him eased as the visitors struggled to maintain their cohesion. Booked.

  • James Morrison

    2.50

    James Morrison

Saw a lot of the ball and was often accurate in his passing but the central midfielder - like the rest of his team-mates - was unable to pose Everton a significant for the majority of the game. That was until he provided a superb cross to assist Lugano's equaliser.

  • Chris Brunt

    Chris Brunt

Was muted in the first half but came to life after the break. Two excellent crosses from the left flank were missed by all of West Brom's attackers.

  • Zoltán Gera

    2.00

    Zoltán Gera

Had a tough time against Baines as he couldn't find a way of beating the Everton left-back. Brought off after 60 minutes for Mulumbu.

  • Matěj Vydra

    1.50

Matěj Vydra Flop of the Match

Tried his hardest to lead the line but was always under the control of Distin and Jagielka. Hauled off at the break for Anichebe.

  • Nicolas Anelka

    2.00

    Nicolas Anelka

The 34-year-old showed his intelligence on the ball when he dropped deep - most notably when he played a neat pass to put Vydra through on goal in the first half - but the further he moved towards his own goal the more isolated his strike partner became.

Substitutions

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Comfortable on the ball and linked up well with his team-mates as West Brom pushed for an equaliser.

  • Victor Anichebe

    0

    Victor Anichebe

Offered a different package to Vydra after the break and West Brom utilised the striker's strength where possible. Held up the ball well in the build-up to his side's equaliser and could have equalised against his former club from close range but was put off by Jagielka.

  • Saido Berahino
    0
    0

    Saido Berahino

Needs to be given more time to make an impact but he showed quick feet inside Everton's box to be able to get a shot away.

  • Tim Howard
    1
    1
    2.50

    Tim Howard

Had very little to do in the first half and had little chance of keeping out Lugano's well-taken header from close range.

  • Leighton Baines
    0
    0
    2.50

    Leighton Baines

Nutmegged Reid after nine minutes which set the tone for the left-back's attacking intentions for the evening. Got forward at every opportunity and comfortably dealt with Gera's minimal threat.

  • Phil Jagielka
    0
    0
    2.50

    Phil Jagielka

Offered a solid partnership with Distin which restricted West Brom's attacking presence in the first half. Did well to put off Anichebe after the break as the former Everton striker squandered a chance from close range.

  • Bryan Oviedo
    1
    0
    2.00

    Bryan Oviedo

Should have tested Foster with his two chances inside the opening 12 minutes and looked lively on the right flank in the first half. Faded as the game progressed.

  • Sylvain Distin
    0
    0
    3.00

Sylvain Distin Top of the Match

Oozed composure at the back. Dominated in the air, read the game superbly and his excellent distribution was highlighted by his long ball to find Lukaku in the build-up to Everton's opener. Saw a late effort rightly ruled out for offside.

  • James McCarthy
    1
    0
    2.50

    James McCarthy

Worked well with Barry in central midfield but was as culpable as the rest of the Everton players for failing to provide any drive after the break.

  • Gareth Barry
    0
    0
    2.50

    Gareth Barry

Broke up the play well in midfield and dominated the early stages alongside McCarthy. Always provided the base for the visitors to build but the likes of Mirallas and Oviedo had a quiet second half.

  • Leon Osman
    1
    0
    2.00

    Leon Osman

Looked hurried in possession at times and posed little threat as the game wore on.

  • Seamus Coleman

    0
    2.50

    Seamus Coleman

Had only one defensive lapse when he was caught out by Vydra's overlapping run in the first half. Gradually increased his tendency to venture forward as the game progressed.

  • Kevin Mirallas
    1
    0
    2.50

    Kevin Mirallas

After struggling to influence for the majority of the first half, Mirallas showed excellent awareness to pounce on Lukaku's flick-on and race ahead of Lugano to put Everton in front with a low finish. Had little impact in the second half. Booked.

  • Romelu Lukaku
    3
    1
    2.50

    Romelu Lukaku

The striker struggled to impose himself in the initial stages and a poor first touch on two separate occasions saw him surrender possession. But the knock-down for Mirallas’ opener was superb and the Belgian could have been easily rewarded for his clever movement inside West Brom’s box with a goal of his own in the first half. Was given little service after the break.
