Live Commentary

  • Southampton are into the top four with the three points they picked up today! I'll leave you with that, thanks for joining me for today's action.
  • Crystal Palace looked devoid of quality and belief. Ian Holloway has one hell of a job on if he is to avoid yet another straight relegation from the Premier League.
  • The first half was tentative from both sides with the main talking point surrounding Marouane Chamakh's tumble inside the box. But the Saints came out for the second period like a house on fire and had settled the game with two quickfire goals from Lambert and Osvaldo inside the first 10 minutes of the second half.
  • FULL-TIME: Southampton 2-0 Crystal Palace
  • 90' + 3'
Another shocking effort from the Eagles. Moxey plays a neat ball across to Cameron Jerome about 20 yards out, but he skies the ball miles over the bar. The look on Ian Holloway's face tells you all you need to know.
  • 90' + 1'
There'll be an additional five minutes following a couple of second half injury stoppages.
  • 90'
Lovren and Thomas collide in the area, but the referee gives a goal kick to Southampton. Not quite a penalty shout on the level of the other three we have had today. Lovren has adapted well to the English game.
  • 88'
James Ward-Prowse tries a shot from distance but it goes well over. Crystal Palace have given this one up.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionAdam Lallana G. Ramírez
  • 85'
The replay shows it was Osvaldo who was in an offside position for that disallowed goal a moment ago. Rodriguez looked miffed for a reason.
  • 84'
GOAL DISALLOWED! Schneiderlin bends a ball into the box and after a bit of a scramble Rodriguez bundles it over the line. He wheels away but his celebrations are cut short by the linesman's offside flag.
  • 81'
The Italy international has got himself up following that knock on his ankle and he looks fine to continue.
  • 80'
Worrying moment for Southampton as record signing Osvaldo goes down holding his ankle, the physio is on to have a look but he looks in pain. He'll probably go off as a precautionary measure.
  • 78'
Southampton have now regained control of the match and look intent on rounding off a fine second half performance with a third goal. James Rodriguez has replaced Lambert and looks eager to impress Pochettino.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionRickie Lambert Jay Rodriguez
  • 75'
Palace win a free kick on the left for a foul on Jerome Thomas, he looks in pain but will hobble to the touchline to get treatment. Jedinak's effort from the set-peice is awful and just about sums up the visitor's day.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionJimmy Kebe Kevin Phillips
  • 72'
Phillips does come on now and the veteran striker receives a mixed reception from the crowd on a return to one of his many old stomping grounds.
  • 69'
Still 20 minutes left to be played. Palace are not completely out of this one just yet, but they need to show some impetus and up the tempo in the final third. Kevin Phillips' introduction looks imminent...
  • 68'
    Yellow Card Adrian Mariappa
  • 67'
    SubstitutionSteven Davis James Ward-Prowse
  • 66'
Crystal Palace have seen quite a bit of the ball in the past 10 minutes but they look worryingly toothless in the final third. Southampton look comfortable even without possession.
  • 63'
A moment of danger in the Saints area as Cameron Jerome crosses but Chamakh leaves it, for some reason, and the ball is cleared away.
  • 60'
Southampton are in complete control of this one. Two-nil is famously a precarious scoreline, but I wouldn't go putting your mortgage on Crystal Palace getting anything from this game. Not even a consolation.
  • 58'
    SubstitutionDwight Gayle Jerome Thomas
  • 57'
    SubstitutionBarry Bannan Cameron Jerome
  • 57'
CHANCE! A cross comes in from the right and Lambert smartly dummies the ball for Steven Davis. Unfortunately the Scot goes for a little too much and volleys the ball high and wide.
  • 55'
A lot of credit must go to the Palace supporters, though. They have seen their side recieve two knockout blows but they haven't stopped signing. If anything they are getting louder.
  • 53'
CHANCE! Another opportunity for Rickie Lambert, this time he sends his half-volley wide from about 20 yards out. Southampton are blowing Palace away at the moment. Lots of creativity and variety in their play.
  • 49'
    Goal Rickie Lambert
GOAL! Rickie Lambert doubles the home side's lead with a fantastic free kick! Osvaldo did well to earn the chance and the England international made no mistake. Bending the ball over the wall and into the corner off the post.
  • 49'
Osvaldo has come out like a man possessed in this second half. He wins the Saints a free kick in a dangerous position with only the four players paying him close attention.
  • 47'
    Assist Adam Lallana
  • 47'
    Goal D. Osvaldo
GOAL! Osvaldo scores his first goal for Southampton! The Italian makes the breakthrough with a finish finish from just inside the area after some fine work from Lallana. Great finish.
  • 46'
Crystal Palace take the kick-off and we are underway for the second half!
  • A story of three penalty shouts at the St Mary's. Two from Palace, one from the Saints, none given. Marouna Chamakh saw yellow for his attempt at winning one off Boruc. Ian Holloway doesn't see Martin Atkinson's point view and has been barking at the referee from the touchline.
  • HALF-TIME: Southampton 0-0 Crystal Palace
  • 45'
Wanyama's ambitious shot from distance goes s long way wide. That should be that for the first half.
  • 43'
The most surpising statistic from the first half. Southampton have enjoyed 38% of the possession so far. I can't imagine Pochettino will be pleased with that.
  • 41'
ANOTHER PENALTY SHOUT! It's Saints' turn to appeal for a spot-kick when the ball hits Gabbidon on the arm in the area but the ref says no. It was at point-blank range as the defender blocked a shot so is probably the correct decision.
  • 39'
Good tracking back by Ward, again, to slide in on Osvaldo and put the ball out of play. The Italy international hasn't quite lived up to his billing, yet.
  • 36'
Southampton survive that period of danger and are back on the front foot themselves. Lambert breaks down the right flank but Gabbidon does really well to get back and block his cross for a corner.
  • 34'
ANOTHER PENALTY SHOUT! Palace appealing for a spot kick again when Kebe goes down, but the referee turns down their appeals. Kebe looked to have gone down a bit too easily there too.
  • 31'
Victor Wanayma is given his final warning after a foul on Chamakh. Another indiscretion and the former Celtic man will be booked. Looking back on the decision to book Chamakh earlier, looks like the referee was spot on.
  • 29'
PENALTY SHOUT! Chamakh is clean through on goal, he dribbles round Boruc, but then goes down. There is contact but the referee deems it as simulation, free kick to Saints and a yellow card for the Moroccan!
  • 28'
    Yellow Card Marouane Chamakh
  • 26'
That free kick from the England international successfully, if awkwardly, from Julian Speroni.
  • 25'
Jedinak is penalised for handball handing a free kick to Southampton just to the left of the penalty area/ Rickie Lambert is standing over it...
  • 23'
CHANCE! Osvaldo does well to find Adam Lallana in the box, he then tees up Lambert who fires a shot fizzing just over the bar from 18 yards. Saints knocking on the door!
  • 21'
The game has deteriorated in the past few minutes, needs a bit of spark to get things going again. Southampton are enjoying plenty of possession but are lacking in penetration.
  • 19'
Danny Gabbidon as a chance to switch the play and set off an attack for the visitors, but he sends an attempted cross-field pass out for a throw-in.
  • 18'
Lambert and Osvaldo reverse roles. Osvaldo tries to put the England international through with a reverse pass but Palace clear their lines.
  • 17'
    Yellow Card Steven Davis
  • 16'
Jimmy Kebe is pulled back by Steven Davis as looked to get Palace going on the front foot. The Saints midfielder earns himself a yellow card for that offence. Palace a growing into the game.
  • 15'
A fizzing cross just flies over Pablo Osvaldo's head from Rickie Lambert on the right. The former Roma striker is still looking for his first Saints goal following his big-money move.
  • 14'
Much better from the visitors. A fine exchange of passes between Chamakh and Kebe sees the former Reading man get free in the box, but he slips before he can shoot and Bannan sees his subsequent effort blocked.
  • 11'
That free kick comes to nothing as the Saints manage clear. Moments later another move breaks down for Holloway's side, this time Maroune Chamakh is penalised for handball.
  • 10'
More forward momentum for the Eagles. Marouane Chamakh is fouled by the Jose Fonte over on the left touchline, free kick to Palace...
  • 8'
Crystal Palace threaten for the first time and earn a free kick in a deep position. Barry Bannan curls the ball into the box but Southampton clear at the second attempt.
  • 5'
CHANCE! Off the line from Ward! Schneiderlin's looping header was goalbound but the Crystal Palace man realised the danger and saved Speroni's cleansheet despite the goalkeeper being lobbed.
  • 3'
Victor Wanyama clatters into Jedinak as he stretches for the ball. An even start to the contest but Southampton look slightly more comfortable on the ball in these early stages.
  • 1'
Southampton take the kick-off and we are underway in the first half at St Mary's!
  • The teams are emerging from the tunnel, moments away from the kick-off...
  • Rickie Lambert, who starts alongside Pablo Osvaldo for Southampton this afternoon, currently sits on 199 goals across the English leagues. The striker will be hoping to bag his 200th today, but goals haven't exactly flowed for Saints so far this season. The club have netted just three times in the Premier League - the joint-fewest - with all three coming from set-pieces.
