Player Ratings: Southampton 0-0 West Ham

The evergreen Jussi Jaaskelainen was in inspired form to prevent the home side from converting their dominance into goals, with both teams forced to settle for a point

    Artur Boruc

Was solid between the sticks, even if he was not overly worked, though did not always exude confidence when coming off his line to claim crosses.

  • Nathaniel Clyne

    Nathaniel Clyne

Got forward well from right-back, widening the pitch, but granted Jarvis too much time and space in the early exchanges. Got closer and made some telling challenges in the second period.

  • Dejan Lovren

    Dejan Lovren

Showed good awareness and reading of the game to snuff out danger, though faced little threat in the form of Maiga. A calming presence at the heart of a backline that didn't always exude confidence last term.

    Jose Rocha Fonte

Devoured Maiga and never gave him a chance to settle or hold up the ball. Showed real comfort on the ball to dictate much of the home side's play too. Also a threat in the opposition box.

  • Luke Shaw

    3.00

    Luke Shaw

Bombed up the flank with an attacking verve and speed that instantly draws parallels with another Southampton academy product that is now the most expensive player in the world. Was subbed after picking up a knock.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin

    4.00

    Morgan Schneiderlin

Formed a very rugged partnership with Wanyama, thundering into challenges and tearing around the pitch. Controlled the middle of the pitch for the home side. Also went close to scoring with several acrobatic efforts.

  • Victor Wanyama

    Victor Wanyama

Still adapting and adjusting to his new team and team-mates, but his aggression and power looks ready-made for the Premier League. Dawdled a little on the ball but played a big role in Southampton's domination of the midfield.

  • Adam Lallana

    Adam Lallana

Somewhat peripheral and struggled to really affect the match in a slightly confused role between the lines. Worked hard to break forward and support the attack though.

  • Rickie Lambert

    3.00

    Rickie Lambert

Failed to mark his 200th appearance for Southampton with a goal, though did power a bullet header against the post. Still working out how to play with Osvaldo, though put himself about as usual.

  • Jay Rodriguez

    3.50

    Jay Rodriguez

Drifted across the frontline, switching from the right flank to the left, and always looked capable of producing a moment of magic, but couldn't deliver the right end product.

  • Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

    Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

The club-record signing from Roma showed some nice, first-touch passes and hold up play. Denied the chance to open the scores early on by Jaaskelainen, but was lively all afternoon - though sometimes a little too extravagant.

    James Ward-Prowse

Replaced Lallana in the second period and immediately assumed set-piece duty, sending in some delicious crosses.

    Calum Chambers

The 18-year-old came on in place of Shaw with 15 minutes remaining.

Jussi Jaaskelainen Top of the Match

Even at 38 years old he showed he still has lightning-fast reflexes. Produced a number of excellent stops, particularly in the second half, to keep his side in the game. West Ham could have been on the end of a cricket score without him.

  • Winston Reid
    4
    1
    2.50

    Winston Reid

Not his usually assured self, with the Hammers' central defensive duo majorly worried by the bullish, forceful hold-up play of Southampton's attack. Made a good headed block to deny Schneiderlin's overhead kick.

  • Joey O'Brien
    1
    2
    2.00

    Joey O'Brien

Often gave up space down the wing, especially when he moved to right-back. Struggled with Southampton's lack of a fixed winger, received a needless yellow card and offered nothing offensively.

  • James Collins
    2
    3
    1.50

    James Collins

Robbed by Lambert deep in his own half but the England international failed to make him pay, and repeated that error several times more. Really did not enjoy being put under such pressure by the Saints' high pressing. Compiled a miserable afternoon by missing a sitter.

  • Guy Demel
    1
    3
    2.50

    Guy Demel

Not overly troubled, save for Shaw's untracked surges from deep, and was, a little surprisingly, subbed off for Rat after an hour with Allardyce clearly concerned with the Saints' penetration down the flanks.

  • Kevin Nolan
    2
    4
    2.00

    Kevin Nolan

Had the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside earlier in the build-up, though it was a rare moment in the spotlight for the 31-year-old in a game that passed him by. Needed to give Maiga more support.

  • Matthew Jarvis
    1
    3
    2.50

    Matthew Jarvis

Frequently found in space and time down the left wing in the first half but his end product totally escaped him, with crosses going horribly wayward. Influence waned as the game wore on.

  • Ravel Morrison
    1
    2
    3.00

    Ravel Morrison

Handed his first start after impressing in pre-season and gave a tidy and assured display. Sent a fierce, curving shot just wide and was a busy, tricky presence in midfield.

  • Mark Noble
    5
    2
    3.00

    Mark Noble

Played some delightful, pinged passes, dictating West Ham's play. Always eager to get on the ball, though was second best to the Saints rugged midfield duo. Provided an occasional burst of creativity in a lifeless West Ham display.

  • Mohamed Diame
    1
    5
    2.50

    Mohamed Diame

Lined up somewhat out of position on the right flank but was an occasional threat. Booked for a cynical foul which heralded a wave of niggly fouls. Didn't do enough to help the full-back behind him.

  • Modibo Maiga
    2
    6
    1.00

Modibo Maiga Flop of the Match

Tasked with filling the enormous boots of Andy Carroll, but struggled to have any affect of the match. Was bossed by Southampton's centre-backs and had fewer touches than both keepers. West Ham need to find a way to play to his strengths or they will have big problems.

Substitutions

  • R. Raţ

    R. Raţ

Came on after an hour in place of Rat, a substitution which highlights West Ham's lack of options.

  • Matthew Taylor
    1

    2.50

    Matthew Taylor

West Ham's third and final sub, he came on for Morrison with 15 minutes left.

  • Ricardo Vaz Te
    1
    3
    2.50

    Ricardo Vaz Te

Replaced the dire Maiga with just over 20 minutes left. Would have been impossible to pay any worse than the Mali striker, and ran the channels quite well.
