Player Ratings: Aston Villa 1-2 Newcastle United

The visitors opened the scoring through Ben Arfa after dominating much of the play early on, wrapping up the win moments after the home side pulled level through Benteke

    Bradley Guzan

Guzan has marked himself as one of the best keepers in the league, which is ironic given he only broke into the first team last season. He could do little about the opening goal with so many bodies in front of him although parried the second straight out to Yoan Gouffran.

The club captain is a powerful presence in the air at times but he'll be disappointed he couldn't stop Loic Remy's run for the first goal when there really should have been a tackle. Yet another game without a clean sheet.

  • Jores Okore

    Jores Okore

The 21-year-old has been in the wars this season, first by missing pre-season through injury and now by leaving the field injured for the second time in the league already.

The left-back was a possible doubt before-hand but pulled through to start after missing their last fixture in the cup. He is no doubt an upgrade on Joe Bennett, but his positioning was sometimes lacking and he dived into one or two tackles.

  • Matthew Lowton

    Matthew Lowton

Ever-dependable at right-back, Lowton has really made his mark on this Villa defence. Loic Remy gave him a torrid time in the first-half however and he failed to put in a tackle when he cut in from the left. Put in some good crosses in the second half but not up to his normal standard.

Karim El Ahmadi Flop of the Match

The Morroco international was inconsistent last season and couldn't command a first-team place. With pre-season injury to Yacouba Sylla he found himself with another starting berth but inconsistency struck again. Tireless runner but some poor passing as the game passed him by and eventually came off.

The 23-year-old wasn't as commanding in the middle as he usually is, although like Andreas Weimann, hasn't started the way he ended last season. Villa couldn't get hold of the game in the first-half and his play depends on possession.

  • Fabian Delph

    Fabian Delph

The former Leeds midfielder has finally found his feet at the club after injuries hampered his early form. He's now the driving force in the middle with his strong runs and agile movement, and, despite the result, didn't do much wrong.

  • Andreas Weimann

    Andreas Weimann

One of the club’s many promising academy graduates but hasn't got off the mark yet this season. Didn't see much of the ball in the first half despite switching wings, but eventually grew into the game and set up the best two chances of the game for Ciaran Clark and Gabby Agbonlahor.

  • Gabriel Agbonlahor

    Gabriel Agbonlahor

He should have been amongst England’s squad selection last week, but wasn’t. He didn't show anything here today to convince those doubters otherwise and couldn't get into the game. He also missed a glorious opportunity early in the second half.

  • C. Benteke

    C. Benteke

The Belgium striker picked up where he left off last season, having already scored three goals prior to today. He was his usual robust self, even if a little quiet in the first-half. Even when quiet he's still a threat and proved that with his fourth goal in as many games from a corner.

The Repbublic of Ireland international came on after half-an-hour of play in place of the injured Okore. He had the best chance for his side in the first-half but hit the side netting when the keeper was rushing back to his goal.

The Bulgaria international came on in place of Andreas Weimann with minutes to play.

    Libor Kozák

Lambert's most expensive addition to his squad this summer at £7 million was a much-needed second-half arrival after such a stale opening 45. He came on in place of El Ahmadi and played just behind Christian Benteke but didn't see much of the ball.

  • Tim Krul

    Tim Krul

Krul is close to breaking 100 appearances in the league for his club and is edging ever closer in style with a clean sheet here today. Was nearly caught out by Ciaran Clark though, but he can be thankful the ball dropped to the defender inside the penalty area.

  • Fabricio Coloccini

The captain showed good pace when threats did come his way and made some bright contributions going forward too.

The former Inter man seemed to link up well with Loic Remy when partnered on the left, although saw him replaced for match-winner Yoan Gouffran in the second-half.

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

The Frenchman wouldn’t have expected a relegation battle last season but his side showed signs they are starting to pick the pace up. He wasn't tested much today but still ended the game with a booking for a poor tackle on Benteke.

  • Mathieu Debuchy

    Mathieu Debuchy

The right-back wasn't tested by either of the Villans' wingers during the first half but wasn't his usual threat going forward today - perhaps wary of the advancing wingers he had to contend with.

  • Yohan Cabaye

    Yohan Cabaye

Cabaye return to the starting line-up for the first time after his proposed move to Arsenal failed to materialise. He was the more advanced of the midfield three but didn't replicate his goal from the same game last season. Came off to applause from the travelling fans.

  • Moussa Sissoko

    Moussa Sissoko

Sissoko set the league alight when he first joined the club but operated in a deeper role alongside Anita today. He was still about to provide his usual runs from midfield and looked to thread a number of passes forward. They didn't always come off, but he was positive.

  • Vurnon Anita

    Vurnon Anita

The versatile midfielder is small in stature but looked the most commanding figure in the middle today. Impressive in the tackle and a hard worker, he also hit a shot from the edge of the box that forced the keeper into a save down low.

The winger opened the scoring on 19 minutes with a shot inside the area. He was the Magpies' best threat going forward and his shot from the edge of the box in the second half required a smart save from Brad Guzan.

    Papiss Cissé

Cisse opened the scoring in the same fixture last season to give Newcastle their first league away win of the season and he put in a similarly good performance again today. He provided the assist for the first goal.

    Loïc Remy

The 26-year-old old made his first start for the club since joining on-loan from QPR as Joe Kinnear’s only summer signing. But he made a fine impression from the left-wing with his direct running the catalyst for their opening goal.

    Yoan Gouffran

Entered the game in place of Loic Remy and occupied the same position on the left-hand side. He scored the second goal minutes after the home side equalised, pouncing on the keepers' parried save.
