Live Commentary

  • Thank you for joining our LIVE text commentary. Goodbye.
  • Just when it looked like the visitors were staging a comeback through substitute Steven Fletcher, the hosts stepped it up. John O'Shea cost his side with a silly challenge on Dwight Gayle in the box and after the youngster converted the penalty, Stuart O'Keefe secured the points with a wonderful goal from just outside the area. Ian Holloway was dancing on the sidelines and rightly so, as Palace are up and running now.
  • Selhurst Park erupts as Crystal Palace claim their first three points of the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over 10-man Sunderland.
  • 90' + 3'
The referee blows for full time!
  • 90' + 2'
    Goal Stuart O'Keefe
WHAT A GOAL! Palace 3-1 Sunderland. O'Keefe picks up the ball after Puncheon loses possession and lashes an effort high into the top corner from 25 yards. What a way for the substitute to net his first goal for the club.
  • 89'
Williams takes the corner but it's punted out for a throw in Palace's half.
  • 88'
SHOT! Westwood tips over a powerful drive from Dikgacoi. It was probably going over but the 'keeper makes sure of it.
  • 86'

  • 84'
SHOT! Williams controls a cross and volleys at goal in one movement but the ball is beaten away by the keeper. A moment later another shot from the Welshman is stopped by Westwood.
  • 83'

Gayle leaves the pitch to a huge applause, as Aaron Wilbraham comes on in his place for Holloway's final substitution.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionMarouane Chamakh Stuart O'Keefe
Chamakh looks to have picked up an injury and goes off for Stuart O'Keefe.
  • 81'
Sunderland try to hit back through Johnson, but the winger's shot is too weak to trouble the goalkeeper.
  • 80'
Ten minutes left at Selhurst Park and after just one moment the whole game has changed. It was a clumsy foul from O'Shea and the defender deserved to be sent off. Very confident penalty from Dwight Gayle too.
  • 79'
    Penalty Goal Dwight Gayle
GOAL! Palace 2-1 Sunderland. Gayle steps up to convert the spot-kick with a feirce low drive. Westwood went the right way but it was far too powerful. The youngster's first ever Premier League goal.
  • 78'
    Red Card John O'Shea
RED CARD! O'Shea was the last man and is shown a straight red card. No complaints from the Sunderland captain.
  • 76'
PENALTY TO PALACE! John O'Shea brings down Gayle inside the box. The referee took some time but eventually points to the spot.
  • 75'
CHANCE! A long ball is aimed towards Fletcher, but Gabbidon comes in at the last second to knock the ball just past the post.
  • 75'
Brilliant work from Moxey to clear the danger after a Sunderland corner.
  • 71'
CHANCE! Chamakh beats the offside trap and pulls the ball back for Williams, but his effort goes terribly wrong when he had plenty of time to compose himself. Well wide from the young Welshman.
  • 70'
The hosts are pushing forward with intent now. This game really could go either way during the final 20 minutes.
  • 67'
Johnson breaks forward for Sunderland and earns his side a corner. He should have done better there.
  • 66'
Moxey sends a volley from 25 yards high into the stands. Palace have been poor so far in the second half.
  • 65'
That was a brilliant header from Fletcher, which may actually be Sunderland's first effort on target. Game on.
  • 64'
    Assist Jack Colback
  • 64'
    Goal Steven Fletcher
GOAL! Palace 1-1 Sunderland. Fletcher scores on his return! Great cross from Colback and the striker times his run to perfection to head the ball back across goal and beyond Speroni.

  • 58'
CHANCE! A great run from Gayle ends with the youngster's shot deflecting wide after a last ditch tackle by Diakite.
  • 57'
Jedinak breaks forward and earns the chance for a long range strike, but it goes over, and there were other players he could have passed to.

Palace have been on the back foot during the first ten minutes of this second half. Sunderland might have it in them to pull level.

Holloway makes his first change of the match, replacing Campana with Johnny Williams.
  • 52'
Westwood just about controls a pass back under pressure and clears the ball upfield. Risky from the goalkeeper.
  • 50'
Diakite's deep cross finds Fletcher, but the striker is ruled offside.
  • 48'
Sunderland look more threatening after that break, which probably has something to do with Di Canio's team talk.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionDong-Won Ji Steven Fletcher
Steven Fletcher has replaced Ji Dong-Won to make his first appearance after five months out injured.
  • 46'

Sunderland get the action back underway.
  • The players are back out for the second half. One change from Di Canio.

  • Crystal Palace lead at the break after Danny Gabbidon's first ever Premier League goal. It was scrappy and he looked very surprised but the hosts are probably worthy of their lead.
  • 45' + 1'
The referee blows for half time.
  • 44'
Giaccherini collects a knockdown, but blasts it at Gabbidon's elbow. It would have been harsh to give a penalty there.

  • 41'

  • 21'
Larsson's set piece is deep but Diakite struggles to direct his header at the far post and it goes out , a poor showing from the defender.

Sunderland have responded well but Celustka wants a free kick just outside the box and the referee is not impressed.
  • 11'
Well that is one of the scrappiest goals you are likely to see but Selhurst Park erupted regardless. Replays show Westwood was blocked off as he tried to get the corner clear.
  • 9'
    Goal Danny Gabbidon
GOAL! Palace 1-0 Sunderland! The hosts have taken an early lead after a Campana corner caused a classic goal-mouth scramble and someone managed to stab home. It seems to have been given to Gabbidon.
  • 8'
Joel Ward picks up the ball on the right and floats a cross into the Sunderland box but it's headed away by Celustka.

  • SUNDERLAND SUBS: Mannone, Cuellar, Cabral, Karlsson, Roberge, Mavrias, Fletcher.
  • SUNDERLAND XI: Westwood; Celustka, Diakite, O'Shea, Colback; Johnson, Larsson, Giaccherini; Vaughan, Wickham, Ji.
  • CRYSTAL PALACE SUBS: Alexander, Ramage, O'Keefe, Williams, Dobbie, Wilbraham, Phillips.
  • CRYSTAL PALACE XI: Speroni; Ward, Gabbidon, Delaney, Moxey; Dikgacoi, Jedinak, Campana, Puncheon; Gayle, Chamakh.
  • The team news is in so let's take a look at those starting line-ups...
  • These two sides have never faced each other in the Premier League before, with their last top-flight meeting coming in March 1991, which Sunderland won 2-1. So this could actually be an entertaining 90 minutes!
  • Palace's return to the top flight has been far from enjoyable so far, having lost both of their opening matches, with defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City respectively. Meanwhile, it has only been slightly better for Sunderland, as they were narrowly beaten by Fulham before conceding a late equaliser at Southampton last weekend.
  • Good afternoon and welcome to our LIVE text commentary for Crystal Palace versus Sunderland at Selhurst Park. This should make for an interesting game as neither side have claimed three points in the new Premier League season yet.
