Player Ratings: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

A superb second-half goal from Demba Ba was enough to send the Blues into an FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City and dump the league leaders out of the competition

    Petr Cech

Had little to do in the first half, other than an unconventional save with his feet from a Chicharito shot that swerved all over the place and almost embarrassed him. Made a sensational save in the second half to deny the Mexican's bullet header that looked destined for the back of the net.

  • Ashley Cole

    Ashley Cole

Picked up what looked like a hamstring injury mid-way through the first half and had to be replaced by Ryan Bertrand. Could prove costly for Chelsea with a packed fixture list to contend with.

  • César Azpilicueta

    César Azpilicueta

Another impressive showing from the Spaniard. Was rarely flustered and looked solid all afternoon.

    Branislav Ivanovic

Did well to stop Welbeck running clear through on goal after 10 minutes and was rarely troubled in the second half in truth.

  • David Luiz

    David Luiz

In a game of few chances, the Brazilian wasted a free kick in a good area, sending the ball flying high over the bar. Had a few nervy moments in defence, but generally strong.

  • Eden Hazard

    Eden Hazard

Was industrious and lively in the first half. Always looked to drive forward and was Chelsea's most dangerous player early on. Should have sealed it after a mistake from Carrick in the second half, which he was onto in a flash, but hit his shot wide.

  • John Obi Mikel

    John Obi Mikel

Did little wrong, made some important challenges and kept Chelsea ticking over nicely in the middle of the pitch.

  • Oscar

    Oscar

Not quite at his influential best. A few neat turns and tricks but was largely stifled by United's midfield. Went close with a late shot but couldn't find the finish to match his run.

  • Ramires

    Ramires

Neat and tidy and a growing influence after the break as Chelsea took control of the game.

    Demba Ba

Had just one chance in the first half with a strong shot which forced De Gea to save with his feet. However, he scored the winner with a sublime finish, taking Mata's pass, beating Ferdinand and poking past a helpless De Gea on the volley.

  • Juan Mata

Juan Mata Top of the Match

Found little space to work his magic in the first half but it was a different story after the break as he ran the show for the Blues. A brilliant dinked pass set up Ba for the winning goal and he forced De Gea into a good save at his near post shortly afterwards.

    Ryan Bertrand

Replaced the injured Cole and will be pleased with his contribution. Escaped a tangle with Nani in the box. Looked to get forward too, but booked for a cynical foul on Chicharito.

    Victor Moses

Late sub for Oscar in stoppage time.

  • Fernando Torres

    David de Gea

Saved well with his feet from Ba in the first half at his near post. Could do nothing about the goal but made another good save from Mata at his near post when the Spaniard looked like adding a second.

  • Chris Smalling

    Chris Smalling

Partnered Rio Ferdinand in central defence and made some important blocks. Found it tougher going in the second half as Chelsea dominated but a decent display.

  • Patrice Evra

    Patrice Evra

Found Oscar a tricky customer in the early stages but did OK. Did brilliantly to set up Van Persie for a late chance which the Dutchman fluffed.

  • Phil Jones

    146
    2.50

    Phil Jones

Played alongside Carrick in midfield, was superb in possession not wasting a pass in the first half. Found it harder going after the break, as Chelsea took control and United chased an equaliser.

  • Rio Ferdinand
    48
    168
    2.50

    Rio Ferdinand

Jeered by Chelsea fans throughout, but did not let the boo boys affect him. Just allowed Ba to steal a yard on him for the goal but otherwise did little wrong.

  • Antonio Valencia

    Antonio Valencia

Came in at right-back for the injured Rafael. Used his strength well defensively and did a fine job in defence. Was pushed further forward as United chased the game but offered little in an attacking sense.

  • Michael Carrick

    Michael Carrick

Stifled the creativity of Chelsea initially, particularly Mata, but faded as the game wore on and almost presented Hazard with the second goal after a rare mistake.

  • Nani
    56
    267

    Nani Flop of the Match

Poor showing from a player who looked low on confidence. Frequently gave the ball away and was wasteful in possession. Did manage a long-range shot that had Cech scrambling but that was as good at it got and he was replaced by Giggs in the second half.

  • Tom Cleverley
    42
    161
    2.50

    Tom Cleverley

Contributed little in a low-key first half. Booked after the break for a clumsy foul on Ramires and was replaced by Robin van Persie on the hour.

  • Danny Welbeck
    97
    126
    3.00

    Danny Welbeck

Gave the Chelsea defenders problems in the first half and set up Chicharito for a header with a super cross. A typical Welbeck performance in truth, lots of good play but never really looked like scoring.

  • Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
    163
    111
    3.50

    Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez

Has scored in his last four games against Chelsea but not today. Worried Cech with a vicious swerving shot in the first half and thought he’d equalised on 60 minutes with a header but was denied by a brilliant Cech save

Substitutions

  • Ashley Young
    59
    135

    Ashley Young

Given the last 10 minutes as he replaced Welbeck and helped set up a late chance for Van Persie.

  • Ryan Giggs
    50
    150

    Ryan Giggs

Replaced Nani as United chased the game but could not influence the result.

  • Robin van Persie
    48

    Robin van Persie

Came on with half an hour remaining but was ineffective when United needed a goal. Had little impact and when he did have a chance with minutes remaining he smashed it high over the bar.
