Player Ratings: Oldham 3-2 Liverpool

A calamitous Brad Jones error before half-time gifted the League One side a huge FA Cup upset, beating last season's finalists 3-2 with goals from Matt Smith (2) and Reece Wabara

Might have done better for Luis Suarez's goal - the goalkeeper seemed to have been wrong-footed - but dealt with most of the crosses that came into the box well enough and will be pleased not to have shown himself up as did Jones.

    Cliff Byrne

A wily old customer, Byrne used all of his experience to upset the illustrious opponents. What was key was knowing when to drop off and when to attack the ball - the central defender knew his lack of pace could be Oldham's undoing. Made a super block at 3-1.

    Jonathan Grounds

A full-back of higher pedigree than League One, Grounds held his own against Sterling and never once looked out of place. The former Middlesbrough man is good in the tackle and made only one mistake in giving the ball away late in the game.

  • Jean-Yves M'voto

    Jean-Yves M'voto

M'voto may have been pinpointed as a weakness in the home XI prior to kick-off, but the central defender was excellent. Won everything in the air and intercepted very astutely. He even almost scored early in the second half.

  • Reece Wabara

    Reece Wabara

Scored an absolutely fantastic goal early in the second half, powering home a towering header. Has a real exuberance from right-back and will run for his side all day long. Won many of the duels against Borini defensively.

  • James Wesolowski

    James Wesolowski

Has always been a dogged central midfielder and that was the case in this game, often filling in and sweeping up while doing the simple things well to allow the more expressionist players in the ranks do their thing.

    Youssouf M'Changama

A shame for the winger that he was put out of the game early on, but delivered a wicked cross for the opening goal during his five minutes.

    Jose Baxter

Touted as the danger man beforehand, but he was overshadowed by Smith as the talk of Oldham. In truth, Baxter didn't have his finest day. But the attacker's insistence on pinging balls around and getting his side moving make him a real threat.

  • Lee Croft

    Lee Croft

Once a Premier League footballer, Croft still has quality on the ball but lacks the fitness to keep up. But in this one-off game, the midfielder ran himself into the ground.

  • Matt Smith

Matt Smith Top of the Match

A huge unit to hit with long balls and Smith proved to be a handful on the deck and in the air. Was in the right place to poach both of his goals and Coates failed to deal with his presence all afternoon.

  • Robbie Simpson

    Robbie Simpson

Simpson's link-up play is good, dropping off the front, and he was able to get the two wide midfielders into the game, which eventually led to the second goal. Rushed a couple of chances but to be expected in such a big fixture.

    Carl Winchester

An early substitute, Winchester was busy, something Oldham needed in their quest for an upset. The midfielder's delivery for the third goal was brilliant, swinging a cross over from wide.

Bradley Jones Flop of the Match

Made an absolute meal of the second goal, spilling a routine cross into the box, and showed why Liverpool might be wise to invest in a goalkeeper sooner rather than later. Looked extremely nervous.

  • Andre Wisdom

    Andre Wisdom

Ought to have got tighter to his man for both the first and third goals and is sometimes guilty of being too enthusiastic in the tackle when standing his ground would be more advisable.

  • Jack Robinson

    Jack Robinson

An exciting prospect going forward, Robinson has the technical ability to become a real asset at left-back for Liverpool. Defensively he wasn't actually challenged too much with Oldham preferring the other flank.

  • Martin Skrtel

    Martin Skrtel

Wasn't helped by Coates alongside him, but Skrtel didn't really exert his usual dominance over the opposition. As you'd expect, the defender headed well and won his battles but his team-mates needed a bit more determination from the players of his ilk to get back into the game.

  • Sebastián Coates

    Sebastián Coates

Couldn't deal with Smith's strength and movement throughout and is seemingly struggling to acclimatise to English football. Was shaky in possession, never looking comfortable, and was on his heels for the opening goal.

  • Joe Allen
    32
    63

    Joe Allen

Almost completely anonymous in a 90 minutes that passed him by. Should have demanded to get on the ball and dictate proceedings but was happy to allow others to try and create chances. His goal took a huge deflection and looked to be initially going wide.

  • Jordan Henderson
    63

    Jordan Henderson

What is impressive about Henderson is his willingness to run beyond the front men, but he had very little opportunity to do so. Passed the ball well but may have wanted to get in possession in and around the box more.

  • Raheem Sterling
    30
    76

    Raheem Sterling

Sterling looked really fired up - so much so that he may have been sent off if he'd carried on as he began - and keen to play little one-twos in the box. Nothing seemed to come off though, and he was substituted for Shelvey.

  • Daniel Sturridge

    Daniel Sturridge

Was a little precious at the treatment handed to him by Byrne but showed fight in trying to affect the game positively. Was always on the shoulder of the central defenders but the service into him wasn't of its usual quality.

  • Fabio Borini
    28

    Fabio Borini

Hasn't scored a single domestic goal since his summer move from Roma, and you can see why. In the 46th minute, Borini was put clean through but scuffed his effort over the bar in what was a glorious chance to bring Liverpool back into the game.

  • Luis Suárez

    Luis Suárez

Having scored eight goals in his last eight games, Suarez again showed why he is so vital to Liverpool's cause if they are to succeed this season. Every time he's on the ball, Suarez looks as if he is going to cause problems.

Substitutions

  • Jonjo Shelvey

    Jonjo Shelvey

A late second-half substitute, he drilled one long-range shot narrowly over the crossbar.

    Stewart Downing

Has real intent when on the ball nowadays and is direct in his running from the right-hand side. The fact that Downing was seen as a big player off the bench to change the game indicates how far he has come in a couple of months.

  • Steven Gerrard

    Steven Gerrard

Asked by Brendan Rodgers to be the saviour at 3-1 down, Gerrard conjured more much-needed urgency from his side. An inspirational character, the captain smashed the bar late on and deserved more for his efforts.
