Africa Cup of Nations leading title winners
1. Nigeria - 2 titles
Nigeria claimed their first Africa Cup of Nations titles in 1980, when they were hosts of the tournament. The Nigerians had to overcome two North African giants in the form of Morocco in the semi-final and Algeria in the final, in order to claim the title in front of 80 000 fans in Lagos. Goals from Segun Odegbami and Muda Lawal helped Nigeria secure an emphatic 3-0 result against Algeria. Their second title occurred 14 years later, when they defeated an inspired Zambian side 2-1 in the final played in Tunis. A side which is brimming with talent and promise has not always played to their potential and will be searching for their elusive third title in South Africa.
