The 2004 tournament saw a 5-way tie of top scorers, with each player able to four goals. Tunisia counted on Francileudo dos Santos's four strikes including the opening goal in the final, while Frederick Kanoute's goals for Mali helped his side reach the semi-finals, when the towering striker scored the opening goal in the quarter-final against Guinea. ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha's four goals during the tournament, including the opening strike against Tunisia in the semi-final, almost put Nigeria within touching distance of the championship, but they came unstuck during a penalty shootout against the eventual champions. Youssef Mokhtari (Morocco) and Dem M'Boma (Senegal) each weighed in with four goals apiece which gave their respective sides an opportunity to play in the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
