Sundowns may not finish top of Caf Champions League Group C, admits Mosimane

Mamelodi Sundowns currently find themselves in third place in their group going into their Caf Champions League clash against Esperance Sportive de Tunis on Wednesday night.

Sundowns have not had the best of starts in this year’s competition, having only registered a solitary victory in their last three encounters. However, Sundowns’ coach Pitso Mosimane continues to remain positive and is already looking ahead to knockout rounds.

Although, the 52-year-old has already begun strategically planning his side’s route to the final, he has admitted that winning their group may be a bridge too far.

“I look on the other side, I was looking at Zesco United last year before we played them in the semi-final. This time around we are also looking on the other side,” Mosimane told Phakaaathi.

“We know that there is Al Ahly SC and we know that there is Zanaco FC, they are very strong. Wydad Athletic Club are also playing in that space, so we have got to box smart. We have got to try and go out of the group … we might not be No.1,” admitted Mosimane.

“We have to understand that there are a lot of tactics in this thing. So, we have got to be smart about it. Remember when we played Zamalek last year, we played them at 3pm, and we know why. So this thing will still twist and turn,” he added.

Injuries and fatigue have also hampered the Brazilian’s’ progress of late, and Mosimane is hopeful that he will have all his star players back by the knockout rounds.

“At that time we might have all the players, but we will never know how the draw will be. It is going to be a big fight,” Mosimane concluded.
