Reports: Bongani Khumalo eyeing SuperSport United return

According to reports, former Totenham Hotspur defender Bongani Khumalo is currently training with SuperSport United.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent, after experiencing a decline of sorts. Khumalo was once seen as one of South Africa’s most promising exports, after moving to England in 2011.

The central defender though, would not have the most enjoyable of experiences in Europe despite playing for a number of teams. This included stints at Colchester United, Doncaster Rovers, Reading, Preston North End in the English championship and with PAOK in Greece.

Khumalo would subsequently return to SA shores where he re-joined SuperSport United before moving onto Bidvest Wits in 2016.

During his time with Wits, Khumalo was part of Gavin Hunt’s history making side which won their maiden Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.

However, the former Bafana Bafana captain’s time would also come to an end after he was deemed surplus to requirements at the end of the 2017/18 season following Wits’ unimpressive campaign.

Khumalo made just 16 league appearances, scoring one goal for the Braamfontein-based outfit as they finished in 13th place on the log.

Nonetheless, TimesLive report that Khumalo may look to return to the Tshwane-based outfit for the third time. Khumalo is currently training with SuperSport in hope of earning a contract.

The report further suggests that Khumalo will travel with the team to Polokwane next week and will hope to impress caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo.

It has been a rather quiet transfer window for SuperSport, who recently signed the trio of James Keene, Luke Fleurs and goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

SuperSport recently watched Denwin Farmer officially join Maritzburg United, while the club parted ways with experienced defender Tefu Mashamaite.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the club will opt to sign Khumalo as they look to shore up their defence ahead of the upcoming season.
