Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele sentenced to community service

Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele has to do community service every Tuesday as part of his punishment for speeding.

The 30-year-old was caught near Sandton driving at 223km/h on the M1 highway last September.

Jele reportedly arrived late at court and a warrant of arrest was issued, but the footballer later apologised.

“I attended court like I always do. The matter was withdrawn and I am doing a diversion,” Jele told The Sowetan.

“For me it was a learning curve. I’ve attended all my cases and I take responsibility for what I have done.

"I am hoping that other people will also learn from my mistake," he concluded.

National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Phindi Mjondwane confirmed that Jele will serve at a community organisation.

“The case was diverted after he took full responsibility for the matter," she said.

“He needs to register with an NGO and report back to court so we can verify that he has registered," she concluded.
