The Brazilian defender was dismissed during a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for a reckless lunge on the Arsenal defender

David Luiz saw red against Arsenal as the thought of tangling with Sead Kolasinac led him to “wet himself”, says Ray Wilkins.

The Brazilian defender was dismissed three minutes from the end of Sunday’s goalless draw at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea win to nil at Stoke 6/4

A wild lunge at Kolasinac saw him ordered from the field, with the 30-year-old reacting petulantly to the attention being shown to him by Alexis Sanchez and a heavy touch.

Former Chelsea coach Wilkins believes Luiz meant his London rival no harm, despite catching the Gunners defender with a high boot, and has instead accused the South America of fearing a physical tussle with an imposing opponent.

He told talkSPORT: “It was an atrocious tackle. He either wants to hurt Kolasinac, or he’s afraid. I’ll go for the latter.

“He saw him coming towards him and thought, ‘wow, this fella is a giant’ and he basically wet himself.

“Kolasinac went to the floor, his boots never came off the ground, he just went for the ball. If Luiz had done that there would have been nothing wrong. It’s on the halfway line for goodness sake.”

While Luiz’s moment of madness did not cost Chelsea on the day, with there little time remaining for Arsenal to snatch a winner, his actions could come back to haunt the Blues.

He is now facing up to a three-match ban for being shown a straight red card.

If Chelsea decide against appealing the decision, then Luiz will sit out a League Cup clash with Nottingham Forest and Premier League meetings with Stoke and Manchester City.

Antonio Conte’s side are set to welcome title-chasing City to Stamford Bridge on September 30, in what could be a crucial clash in the battle for top-flight supremacy.
