Former Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba still searching for new club

Former Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba remains hopeful of finding a new club before the closing of the current transfer window.

Gcaba parted ways with the Soweto giants just at the end of the 2017/18 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season as the club decided against renewing his contract.

The Port Shepstone-born defender spent half of the past season on loan at Platinum Stars (now Cape Umoya United) as he was deemed surplus to requirements by coach Milutin Sredojevic and his technical team.

“I am still at home training on my own and yes my agent, Mike (Makaab), is still checking for a club for me,” Gcaba told Goal on Monday.

“Yeah, hopefully there will be something concrete before the transfer window closes, and I think something will come up as time goes by,” he added.

Gcaba trained with Black Leopards for some time, and although he looked set to sign on the dotted line, the proposed move failed to materialise.

“We didn't agree in terms of money and other personal things with Leopards otherwise they were impressed and willing to give me a contract,” concluded the 32-year-old.

Gcaba launched his career in the top flight with Free State Stars in 2008 where spent four years before joining the Buccaneers in 2012.

In 2013, he was part of the Sea Robbers' side that narrowly missed out on lifting their second continental crown as they lost to Egyptian giants, Al Ahly in the Caf Champions League final.

A season later, he helped the Mayfair-based side to the Nedbank Cup glory as they defeated Bidvest Wits 3-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium

In addition, the left-footed defender was part of the Pirates squad that reached the final of the Caf Confederation Cup in 2015 where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Etoile Sportive du Sahel.
