Cape Town City sign Bafana Bafana midfielder Gift Links

Cape Town City continue to bolster their squad in preparation for the upcoming 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign with the capture of highly rated Bafana Bafana midfielder Gift Links.

Links, who was on the books of Egyptian-based outfit Al Assiouty Sports, better known now as Pyramids Football Club, made an instant impression following his move to North Africa.

The youngster joined the Egyptian club in January of 2018 and made 12 appearances for the club in the Egyptian Premier League, subsequently earning him a spot in coach Stuart Baxter’s recent Cosafa Cup squad.

However, Links’ time in Egypt would be cut short after Al Assiouty was taken over by ambitious Saudi Arabian businessman Turki Al-Sheikh, who is aiming to make the newly founded Pyramids FC a dominant force on the continent.

The Saudi Arabia Sport Authority chairman has already gone on to make his intentions knowns as he has invested heavily in building the squad, bringing in some of African football’s biggest names.

This has invariably opened the door to a South African return for Links who was previously on the books of Platinum Stars. But with a number of clubs believed to have been interested in the left winger, the Citizens have now revealed that the 19-year-old will be joining them on a permanent deal.

According to the club, Links’ five-year-deal is the biggest coup since their inception at the beginning of the 2016/17 season as the club brought the Bafana Bafana star in on a record breaking deal.

Links is the latest player to join City, with the club having already secured the signatures of Ivory Coast player Kouassi Kouadja and former Orlando Pirates winger Riyaad Norodien.

With the club having begun their pre-season preparations, City head coach Benni McCarthy will be hoping that he has enough firepower and creativity to better his side’s fifth place finish of the previous season.
