Contrary to what the SA coach exclusively told Goal on Tuesday, Igesund has performed a u-turn and decided to give his national chargers a rest for Christmas and New YearThe 2014 Caf African Nations Championship starts on January 11, and Gordon Igesund told Goal that he is worried that South Africa's rivals have already been training together for a month.
Igesund explained that Bafana were behind in their preparations and that is why they needed to catch up with a camp just before the New Year. However the pre-tournament camp is cancelled, and a new training schedule is organised.
“I feel this has been a hectic season for everyone, especially the players, so it is only fair that we call off the mini-training camp and give them some rest. I would like them to go and spend some time with their families and come back refreshed ahead of a very long camp,” said Igesund.
The new camp is set for Thursday, January 2 in Cape Town. The Chan version of the South African team which excludes overseas based players (as per the rules of the tournament) will initially play Mozambique, Mali and Nigeria during the group stage.
