“Ajax are more than willing to have Clayton back, and the negotiations are at an advanced stage.

“The player has been asking to leave the club for a long time now, and I am sure he will be glad that it is finally happening,” said one of the Sundowns officials who asked to remain anonymous.

The 29-year-old Daniels joined Sundowns in 2011 and featured regularly for the Brazilians until the arrival of coach Pitso Mosimane.

Sundowns have since signed Ghanaian defender Rashid Sumaila and Togolese defender Emmanuel Mathias ahead of the new season, leaving no space for Daniels.

On the other hand, Ajax Cape Town are still searching for an experienced central defender after losing Matthew Booth to Bidvest Wits a few weeks ago.
