Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Okonkwo signs for MP Black Aces

Okonkwo has kept his word that he would prefer to stay in South Africa and play in the PSL despite European interest

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Onyekachi Okonkwo has finally joined Mpumalanga Black Aces after signing a one-year deal, the club confirmed.

Goal reported last week that the Nigerian international is heading to Mpumalanga to sign with the new PSL boys, although their promotion to the PSL has not been confirmed.

“Onyekachi Donatus Okonkwo or simply Tico joined AmaZayoni on a free transfer and signed a one-year contract with an option for another year.

“The paperwork was completed yesterday and today he passed his medical, and he will commence training with the first team on Tuesday,” reads the statement on the club website.

The 31-year-old Okonkwo was released by Pirates over a week ago, and he was almost immediately contacted by Aces for a possible move.

However, he did not want to rush into any decision, because a few European clubs were interested in his services.

Aces chairman Mario Morfou expressed his delight at signing Okonkwo, and he believes that the hard-tackling midfielder will be an asset to the team.

“There were lengthy negotiations and I consider him a big signing for Aces and I am very confident that he will be a big asset for the club,” said the Aces chairman Morfou.
