thumbnail Hello,

Bidvest Wits and Siyavuma Sports Group confirm that Matthew Booth has signed a contract with the Students from Ajax Cape Town

Former Ajax Cape Town and Bafana defender Matthew Booth is back in Gauteng after signing with Bidvest Wits on Tuesday.

Booth signed a one-year deal with the Students after weeks of speculation, and he will now work with the former SuperSport United mentor Gavin Hunt.

The player’s agency Siyavuma Sport Group confirmed on their twitter account that Booth will indeed turn out for the Clever Boys next season.

“Congratulations to Siyavuma Client Matthew Booth on his move to Bidvest Wits. A great signing for the club and the Bidvest brand,” read the tweets.

However, Wits Director George Mogotsi failed to confirm the acquisition of Booth and revealed that the centre-back is “just” training with the club.

“He is just training with us and the club hasn’t said anything regarding that. If his agency has confirmed then finish the story with them,” George Mogotsi told Goal.

Nonetheless, one of Wits officials who asked to remain anonymous could not hide the excitement of having Matthew Booth at the club.

“He completed his move on Tuesday. A one-year deal it is, with an option to renew. We are very happy,” said the Wits official.

The 36-year-old Booth will be under immense pressure to perform at Wits, as other experienced defenders such as Mbulelo Mabizela and Aaron Mokoena failed to live up to expectations and were eventually released by the Johannesburg-based club.

Booth, who also played for Sundowns, joins veteran striker Benjani Mwaruwari who completed his move from another Cape Town side Chippa United last week.

Bidvest Wits are expected to release a few players ahead of the new season, as Hunt will look to start building his empire on a new foundation.
