Benni McCarthy's older brother and manager, Jerome has confirmed with Goal.com South Africa that the former SA striker is remaining with Orlando Pirates, and not joining Ajax
Benni McCarthy’s older brother Jerome McCarthy who also manages him, has confirmed to Goal.com South Africa that speculation about the former Bafana striker leaving Orlando Pirates for Ajax Cape Town is false.
Even though Ajax Cape Town opened up doors for McCarthy to play overseas for the likes of Ajax Amsterdam, Porto and Blackburn, Jerome confirmed that his younger brother is happy at Pirates.
“As far I am concerned, Benni is not going anywhere. He will remain with his club Orlando Pirates. Now I can confirm that those are just rumours which are false,” said Jerome.
His manager confirmed that the priority is to recover from the injury which saw him sadly missing out on the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, just as he missed out on the 2010 World Cup through injury and fitness.
"I think it was very unfortunate for him to get injured, because I think he would have made the squad. Everyone knows that he still performs beyond expectations whenever he plays.
“At the moment we are just focusing on him getting better, so that hopefully when the season resumes he will be fit again,” he said.
Jerome also confirmed that his brother will not be retiring anytime soon, and that he is raring to reproduce his goalscoring instincts of old.
“Most definitely, Benni is still young at heart and he enjoys his football a lot. I don’t think he is even considering retiring at the moment. His loyalties for now are with Orlando Pirates."
On the other hand Ajax Cape Town assistant coach, Wilfred Mgeyi admitted that he wanted the player to return to the Urban Warriors.
"I would have loved to work with him but it seems like he is not showing interest. Even this morning I tried getting hold of him but he did not pick up his phone," said Mugeyi.
