South Africans Abroad Review: Serero helps Ajax Amsterdam defeat PEC Zwolle

The Ajax Amsterdam winger weighed in with a goal during his side's 2-1 win over Eredivisie leaders PEC Zwolle
Thulani Serero won the battle versus Kamohelo Mokotjo's PEC Zwolle on Saturday, as the controversial Bafana Bafana midfielder opened the scoring for Ajax Amsterdam during their 2-1 win. The game remained goalless until Serero hit the back of the net in the 72nd minute.

Mokotjo was also involved throughout the match, but the influential midfielder could not help his side overcome a determined Ajax at home.

The victory moves the defending Eredivisie champions within two points of Zwolle, who remain at the summit of the table with 13 points from six games.


Sive Phekezela watched from the bench as Gefle defeated Brommapojkarna 1-0 at home, with Jakob Orlov securing the victory with an early goal. Gefle moves into 12th position on the Allsvenskan log, with 25 points from 23 games.

Ayanda Nkili was involved throughout Orebro's 2-1 win over Assyriska on Thursday, with the victory moving his side within a point of catching Falkenberg at the top of the Superettan [Swedish Second Division].
Ricardo Nunes was on the losing side in Slovakia, as Zilina were crushed 4-1 by Trencin on Saturday. Nunes played the entire match which saw Denis Vavro earn a 23rd minute red card, which meant Zilina had a man down for the majority of proceedings. Zilina remains in eighth position on the league standings, with 12 points from nine games.

Kagisho Dikgacoi had a disappointing match against Manchester United, with his controversial challenge on Ashley Young in the 46th minute earning him a red card and leading to a penalty for the Red Devils, which Robin van Persie duly slotted home. Dikgacoi's sending off proved to be the game changing moment as United eventually ran out 2-0 winners.

Steven Pienaar missed out on Everton's 1-0 win over Chelsea at Goodison Park to an injury picked up during training. Roberto Martinez has intimated that the midfielder may be out of Everton's next match against West Ham United.

Bongani Khumalo was on the pitch throughout Doncaster Rovers 0-0 draw against Huddersfield Town on Saturday, while Dean Furman remained on the bench. The draw sees Rovers move into 18th position on the Championship log with five points from five games.

Peterborough United got back to winning ways with an emphatic 3-0 triumph over Bristol City away from home. Kgosi Nthle was an unused substitute throughout the match, with the win moving Darren Ferguson's outfit into second on the League One standings.


In Belgium, Anele Ngcongca's Genk eradicated Zulte-Waregem 5-2 at home with the full-back involved throughout the match. Genk move into sixth position on the Belgian PRO League standings, with 13 points from seven games.

Darren Keet was also on the winning side this weekend, with Kortrijk recording a 3-0 win against Gent. The victory sees Keet's side move into eighth on the league standings.

Ayanda Patosi emerged from the bench for Lokeren in the 70th minute, with his side crushing Cercle Brugge 3-0 to move into third. Patosi's comeback from injury has been slow, but the exciting talent will hope for more game time as the season progresses. 


Siyanda Xulu could not stop CSKA Moskow from defeating Rostov 1-0 on Saturday, with the central defender playing the full ninety minutes in Moscow. The loss means Rostov slip into fifth position on the league table, with 14 points from eight matches.


After scoring on his debut for the club, Daylon Claasen failed to inspire Lech Poznan again as his side lost 2-0 to Slask Wroclaw on Saturday. Lech Poznan slipped into eighth position on the log after the loss, with nine points from seven matches played.
