South Africans Abroad: May Mahlangu suffers serious injury

Mahlangu has been left disheartened after his Achilles tendon injury is set to keep him out of action for the rest of the year
Bafana Bafana and Helsingborg midfielder May Mahlangu is facing a long injury lay-off after injuring his Achilles tendon during training with his club on Sunday.

Mahlangu will undergo surgery on Wednesday and it is feared that he will miss the rest of 2013 due to the severity of the injury.

The long road to recovery means Mahlangu will miss South Africa's must-win clash against Botswana in 2014 World Cup qualifying. The influential figure will also be out of action for the rest of Helsingborg's 2013 season.

“It is always an honour for any player to play for their country, and the same goes for me. I would have loved to be there to represent my country but circumstances alter cases. I have great confidence, however, that whoever is selected will do a good job,” Mahlangu said.

“But it will be sad watching from the sidelines knowing you cannot help your teammates, because at the end of the day we all want to see our country do well. The guys have my full support. What is important for me now is to focus on my recovery process.”

An important player for both Bafana Bafana and Helsingborg, Mahlangu has been linked to a move to another league in Europe with Turkey, France and England all likely prospects.

“It’s one of those things. Injuries are part of the game. I just have to be positive and get back on my feet. Yes it is a setback, but it is not the end of the world, I must just take it one day at a time and not rush coming back as it might affect me in the long run,” Mahlangu concluded.

Mahlangu will also not be available for South Africa's upcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Burkina Faso in August.
