South Africans Abroad: Phiri saves Brondby with late winner

18-year-old Lebogang Phiri netted a vital late winner for his club side Brondby, which secured their place in Denmark's Superliga for next season


Steven Pienaar played his final game of the Premier League season against Chelsea on Sunday. The Toffees were able to fight back from a goal down, but a sublime finish at the near post from Fernando Torres won the match for Chelsea.

Pienaar enjoyed a solid season for Everton, starting on 35 occasions and netting 6 goals. He will have to prepare for next season without David Moyes as his manager, with the Scotsman taking over at Old Trafford. 

In six days Kagisho Dikgacoi will start his most important match of the season, the Championship playoff final against Watford at Wembley.


Tokelo Rantie played 86 minutes during Malmo's dramatic 2-2 draw against Mjallby in a Allsvenskan clash on Friday night. Malmo sit in 5th position on the league table, with 16 points from 9 games. 

May Mahlangu played the full ninety minutes against Elfborg on Monday night, with his side winning 2-1 due to a double from Ghanain David Accam. Helsingborg still hold top spot in the Allsvenskan having garnered 22 points from 9 games.


Anele Ngcongca's season has come to an end in Belgium, with Genk playing their final match of the Belgian PRO League campaign against Club Brugge on Sunday. The side they defeated in the Belgian Cup final exacted revenge with a 1-0 win at home, meaning Genk will finish 5th on the league table for the 2012/2013 season. 


18-year-old Lebogang Phiri provided Brondy with a priceless winner in the 93rd minute against relegation rivals Horsen on Monday night. Phiri capped off a great season in Denmark with his second goal of the campaign.

The youngster has been a revelation for the club since his first appearance earlier this year and may catch the attention of national selectors soon. Brondby finished 9th on the Superliga table, avoiding relegation into the 1st division in Denmark.
