Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that outgoing striker Katlego Mphela is not part of the team that travelled to Zambia for their mid-season tour.

Mphela signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs earlier this week, and although Sudowns’ PRO Kabelo Mosito couldn’t reveal if that influenced the decision to leave ‘Killer’ behind, it is clear that Mphela will not form part of Pitso Mosimane’s plan for the second half of the season.

“The team has left already, but Mphela is not part of the team,” Mosito told Goal. “I cannot go into details as to why, but he remained behind,” he said.

Mosito added that the two teams – Chiefs and Sundowns – are busy negotiating the early release of Mphela who will definitely join AmaKhosi later this year.

However, he confirmed that no agreement has been reached and that the 29-year-old Mphela remains a Sundowns player.

“The two teams are still negotiating, but no agreement has been reached regarding his early release from his current contract. Maybe there will be something next week,” he added.
