Mandla Sangweni was celebrating his 26th birthday when he allegedly used his brother Siyabonga's gun to shoot his uncle on Friday, confirmed local Colonel Brenda Mgenge

Earlier reports had incorrectly leaked that the Sangweni Brother's father was shot, but it was in fact their 66-year-old uncle, Vusumuzi Sangweni during an incident near Kwambonambi in KwaZulu-Natal. The uncle is in criticial condition in hospital.

Colonel Brenda Mgenge also confirmed that Mandla Sangweni is arrested for the shooting.

Vusumuzi's daughter, Nono Sangweni expressed her recollection of the events, while the arrested former AmaZulu player, Mandla was unavailable to comment at the time of going to press.

“What I can say is my father was attacked. He was shot in his yard. He didn’t go anywhere or out, to provoke anyone. His brother’s son, they came and then they quarrelled and then gunshots were heard,” the SABC reported Nono Sangweni to have stated.

“The gun belongs to Siyabonga Sangweni who plays for Orlando Pirates, but he (Vusumuzi) was shot by Mandla,” said Nono.

The incident has come as a shock to the football community with famous defender Siyabonga Sangweni being a well respected national hero for Bafana Bafana. Siyabonga has made a name for himself with outstanding long range strikes for Pirates and South Africa.

He's struggled with injuries over the last year, while his brother Mandla has struggled to hold on to a regular place at a club. The latter was celebrating his 26th birthday when the incident took place.
