SA Sports Star of the Year Itumeleng Khune: I had an upper hand

Khune was the best football player in the country last season, helping Chiefs to two major trophies, and he has also been one of the outstanding players for Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana captain Itumeleng Khune has expressed his delight at being voted and crowned the 2013 SA Sports Star of the Year.

Khune admitted that he was in the same category with the best athletes in his category, and he believes that every single one of them deserved the award.

“I was in the same category as Chad (le Clos). He’s been doing well for himself and for the country. I have so much respect for the other nominees, and I dedicate this award to all of them, because they all deserved it. I am excited,” said Khune after the SA Sports Awards ceremony.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper, who was named Footballer of the Year earlier this year, revealed that he stood a better chance to win after it was announced that the public will be voting for their Star for the year 2013.

“I didn’t doubt myself when it came to the public voting, but I knew I was competing with the best. But I accumulated 2.7 million votes during the Carling Black Label, and when they said people will be voting for the Sports Star of the Year award I thought I stood a better chance,” added Khune.
