Two second half goals from Mohammed and Sekotlong gave Clinton Larsen his first win as Maritzburg United coach in a KZN Derby played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday

Maritzburg United enjoyed possession in the early stages of the game, but failed to create any goalscoring opportunities until at least after 12 minutes when Thamsanqa Mkhize sliced through the AmaZulu defence before his attempted cross was blocked by Msekeli Mvalo for a corner.

Usuthu had intensions of their own and created their best chance of the half in the 19th minute when Marc van Heerden whipped in a decent cross into the United’s box, and found Ayanda Dlamini who then had a poor first touch when he had only Shuaib Walters in front of him.

The home side won a free-kick on the edge of United’s penalty area towards the 40th minute, but Van Heerden’s low shot was brilliantly pushed away by Shuaib Walters to keep the score line at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.

United had a brighter start to the second half, as Yakubu Mohammed broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart to spark the game into life.

Thokozani Sekotlong then doubled the visitors’ lead with a clever lob over Kapini Tapuwa on the hour mark, after being played through by Ryan de Jongh on the left hand side of the AmaZulu box.

Usuthu struggled to recover from that setback, and at times Maritzburg United looked likely to score their third of the game and possibly put the game to bed.

However, there was still time for Usuthu to at least get the consolation goal when Sthembiso Ngcobo stretched his legs onto a long ball played into the United’s area, but the former Durban Stars forward didn’t to have enough contact with the ball as Walters collected easily.

Goodman Dlamini squandered a glorious chance to pull back in the 90th minute after receiving Ayanda Dlamini’s cross alone inside the United’s area, but his casual was deflected for a corner by Mohamed Awal, as the Team of Choice collected all three points against their rivals.
