The Bafana captain was instrumental in Chiefs success last season, and that saw him win the PSL Footballer of the Year award among many others
Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune revealed that his nomination for the SA Sport Awards came as a big surprise as he didn’t expect any recognition after being honoured by the PSL at the end of last season.
Khune has been nominated in two categories – SA Sport Star of the Year and SA Sportsman of the Year – and admits that he’s been nominated alongside the best athletes.
“It came as a big surprise, because I think after being nominated and having swept everything that was on offer in the PSL and at club level, I thought that was the end of me being recognized for other things,” said Khune on SABC’s 3Talk.

“But I was so surprised when I was told that I am being nominated for the Sport Star of the year. I am competing with the best talented guys and a lady in my category and I think it’s a tough one, but the votes will determine who walks away with the accolade,” he said.
The 26-year-old Chiefs and Bafana skipper believes all the nominees have worked hard in their respective sporting codes and says it’s time for members of the public to vote for their favourite athletes.
“I think whoever walks away with it will deserve it. I mean, we worked so hard. We put in our efforts and we put smiles on South African citizens. I think it’s time they show their support and vote for their favourite,” added Khune. The winners will be announced during what is expected to be a glittering function at Sun City on November 17.
