Baxter believes Chiefs’ new recruit Ivan Bukenya has settled in quicker than expected, but admits he wasn’t really tested as AmaKhosi lost to Celtic in the Macufe Cup

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter was impressed with his young charges despite going 1-0 down to Bloemfontein Celtic in the Macufe Cup on Sunday.

Baxter introduced several unfamiliar faces in the second half of that match, and says the boys didn’t disappoint in front of a packed Free State Stadium.

“I thought a lot of the players did themselves a lot of good, especially the young ones that came on. Philani (Cele) came on and did a great job. He got in between their lines and he gave them a headache.

“So, I thought it was a good game again on a poor surface, but it was a good game. Both teams tried to make it more than a friendly to the supporters and I think both teams succeeded in doing that,” said Baxter after the match.

The 60-year-old Englishman was also impressed with debutant Ivan Bukenya although he feels the Ugandan international was a bit relaxed at times.

“Ivan did a good job. Very calm, very composed, but maybe a little bit too calm a couple of times in the second half. He did well. He did better than I thought he would do. He had a little bit of presence,” he said.

Baxter’s counterpart Boebie Solomons couldn’t hide his excitement at defending the Macufe Cup, and dedicated the win to Clinton Larsen who vacated his post last Monday.

He was also happy that Celtic have restored some lost pride, and he is still positive that the team will do well in their next 24 league games.

“We played well. I just wish coach Clinton (Larsen) was here to celebrate with us. We dedicate this win to him,” said Solomons. “We are very proud of the boys. We restored some pride, and it’s only six games into the season. So, there are still 24 league games to go. Hopefully, this will be the start of a nice run so we can pick up some points,” he said.
