Ndumiso Mabena silences critics in Orlando Pirates friendly

The Mpumalanga-born striker hasn’t been clinical enough in front of goal and their loss to Platinum Stars in the MTN 8 final had made things even worse for the Pirates man

Orlando Pirates forward Ndumiso Mabena is slowly but surely silencing his critics as he continues to work hard for the men in black.

Mabena was heavily criticised for missing the penalty during the MTN 8 final in Durban which Pirates eventually lost 3-1 on penalties.

However, the 26-year-old Mabena scored a brace in Saturday’s friendly game against a team from Tembisa at the Rand Stadium.

The game was part of Pirates’ preparation for their Caf Champions League second leg, semi-final match against Esperance next weekend.

Some feel Mabena has done nothing to please the supporters for the past four years and they believe he should have left the club a long time ago.

Though, Mabena has contributed to Pirates Caf Champions League success. He scored the only goal when Pirates beat Zanaco FC 1-0 in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Mabena has consistently made the Pirates squad and he’s expected to travel with the rest of the team to Tunisia, perhaps because Bucs have a small Caf squad.

His club coach Roger de Sa previously told the media that Mabena’s selection for the team is purely based on the amount of work he puts in and goals he scores at training. Saturday’s brace could well be enough for him to at least play a part in Pirates’ next official match.
