Mhlongo: Orlando Pirates nearly destroyed my football career

Mhlongo says he always believed that he will recover from a horrific injury he suffered while still at Pirates in 2009

Platinum Stars veteran defender Benson Mhlongo has revealed the worst kept secret about his time at Orlando Pirates before he signed for the newly crowned MTN 8 champions.

Mhlongo suffered a broken leg injury while playing for Pirates against AmaZulu in 2009, and his football career was thought to be over immediately after the injury.

However, the 32-year-old Mhlongo eventually recovered after Pirates allegedly asked him to sign what he calls “insurance papers” that would have ended his career.

“Pirates gave me insurance papers to sign to say it’s over, and if I signed those papers I was not going to be here today. They nearly ended my career. I still had two years with them, and I told them I will take my chances,” said Mhlongo after the match.

He added: “If I don’t recover I will see what I can do afterwards. I did recover and I am back, and I won against them. What a good feeling!”

Mhlongo started his professional career with Bidvest Wits in 2001 and he moved to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2005 before securing a move to Pirates in 2008.
