Orlando Pirates suffer Phungwayo blow

Phungwayo could not last for more than 40 minutes as Pirates were beaten 3-1 by Dikwena in a penalty shoot-out on Saturday night

Orlando Pirates have been dealt with a blow following the news that Patrick Phungwayo could be out for the rest of the season.

Phungwayo sustained what is suspected to be an ankle injury and he was replaced by Thabo Matlaba just before the halftime in Pirates’ MTN 8 final against Platinum Stars on Saturday.

The former Bidvest Wits man couldn’t walk on his own as he collected his runners-up medal after his team’s 3-1 defeat to Dikwena on penalties, and he announced on his official twitter account that his season is over.

“Hard luck boys and it’s confirmed I’m out. My season is over,” tweeted Phungwayo.

The 25-year-old Phungwayo has been in fine form for the Buccaneers since the Caf Champions League match against AC Leopards in Congo which made it difficult for Roger de Sa to drop him.

He went on to win the man of the match award in Pirates’ 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs on Heritage Day for his brave performance down on the left.

It remains to be seen whether further tests will be done to determine the extent of Phungwayo’s injury, as this was the case with Andile Jali.
