Swallows came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Maritzburg United, and Marques believes the KZN-based side played better in the second half.
“Sometimes football is cruel and it is the old saying; if you don’t take your chances you get punished, and that is exactly what happened. Maritzburg was completely a different team than they were in the first half,” said Marques at a post-match press conference.
However, Marques was satisfied with a point at home and also with the way Swallows pushed for that equalizer which came 15 minutes from time.
“We played well, we kept position, and we kept probing. We created good opportunities and I think from that perspective we were on target, but a point at home I will take it,”
Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp said he was pleased with a point away from home especially looking at the fact that they should have lost the game easily in the first half.
“I am quite pleased with this one point. I think in the first half we could have been at least 2-0 down, but it’s always like this if you don’t take your chances and give the opponents a chance to recover,” said Middendorp.
The former Chiefs mentor believes they should hold on to their lead a little longer, but he praised his players for the character they have shown since the beginning of the season.
“I think in the second half we grabbed the opportunity; not in the full amount, but it is one point and compliments (must go) to my players so far, because the character is good,” he said.
