McCarthy’s agent Rob Moore says Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza had an influence in Benni’s retirement
The football fraternity was last week shocked by the sudden retirement of Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy.
McCarthy did not reveal the reasons for his retirement from football after 17 years, but reports had it before it happened that the former Porto man will not be at Pirates next season.

McCarthy’s agent Rob Moore went public about Benni’s situation and he claims that they tried to contact Dr Irvin Khoza for contract negotiations, but the chairman could not be reached.
Moore went on to say that McCarthy then felt unwanted and eventually decided to quit permanently.

Goal reported towards the end of last season that the relationship between coach Roger de Sa and Benni McCarthy is not healthy, and that Dr Khoza will certainly let McCarthy go and keep De Sa.
McCarthy’s move to Pirates was facilitated by Dr Khoza himself, and he certainly was the only person to decide if the striker should stay.

Khoza has always been fond of McCarthy, but he hasn’t gone public about Benni’s situation and his sudden retirement.
Pirates will certainly lose another senior player in Moeneeb Josephs, after it was confirmed that his contract will also not be renewed.
However, Pirates are in talks with the Ghanaian club Ashanti Gold for the services of their goalkeeper Fatau Dauda.
