Kaizer Chiefs one point away from their first PSL title in almost a decade

AmaKhosi could end their eight-year PSL title drought with a draw against SuperSport United on Wednesday night

Kaizer Chiefs are in a great position to win the PSL title for the first time in eight years, even after being out of action this weekend.

AmaKhosi are still top of the log with only two games remaining and they lead second placed Platinum Stars by three points after the Rustenburg-based outfit failed to get maximum points against Golden Arrows to keep the title race alive.

AmaKhosi though could officially secure the title with a draw at home against SuperSport United on Wednesday night or they could wait until the final day of the season as they will take on another Tshwane side in University of Pretoria.

Chiefs have been in this situation back in 1987 where they were a point away from winning the league, but they lost all their remaining games to hand Jomo Cosmos the league title.

However, history is unlikely to repeat itself this season as AmaKhosi have superior goal difference and that means Dikwena will require at least 10 goals in their final game to win the title should Chiefs lose their remaining two games.

The Chiefs management will certainly be pleased with the team’s effort this season looking at the signings that they made at the beginning of the season including coach Stuart Baxter who returned to the country after almost eight years.

Despite starting this season on a low with a 4-1 loss to Sundowns in the MTN 8, Baxter turned Chiefs fortunes around and opposing clubs failed to find an answer to counter them in the PSL.

The Glamour Boys have consistently been getting results and despite playing to 10 draws this season, they have managed 15 wins against teams that they struggled to beat over the years.

They have also defended well as a team, because they have conceded only 19 goals so far this season despite being forced to chop and change their back four due to injuries.
