Ajax Cape Town vs Liverpool clash still on, as formal announcement expected on Monday

Shooz Mekutu confirms that Liverpool are still coming to South Africa to play against Ajax Cape Town, but reveal that official announcement will be made on Monday by both teams

Ajax Cape Town PRO Shooz Mekutu has told Goal that their game against Liverpool is still on, but has now changed the tune about the exact date having previously revealed that the match is scheduled for May 31.

Liverpool haven’t confirmed their tour to South Africa as yet, but Mekutu confirmed that the English giants are waiting for Monday’s press conference to make it official.

“There will be a press conference on Monday where the announcement will be made. The date and everything else has been finalized, but we cannot go public about them until Monday. That is why Liverpool are silent about it,” Mekutu told Goal.

With the proposed Ajax and Liverpool match believed to be scheduled for May 31, fans would be worried as whether they will be able to see their European-based stars against the Urban Warrios, because of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers that will take place a week later.

Normally, national teams would call their players at least seven days prior to prepare for their games, but Mekutu is confident that Liverpool will bring their stars with them after signing the contract.

“When we signed contract with Liverpool, we agreed that they will bring the Liverpool team that we see play week in and week out. We are sure that they will stick to the contract and bring their best players,” he added.

The Urban Warriors spokesperson brushed off reports that they are expecting two other teams from England’s top-flight and he added that Ajax never contacted them for a possible invite to South Africa.

Newcastle United and Steven Pienaar’s Everton were reportedly on their way to South Africa at the beginning of June, but Mekutu labelled the reports as “just a rumour”.

“I cannot confirm anything about Everton and Newcastle coming to South Africa, because there hasn’t been any negotiations whatsoever from the concerned teams. So it is just a rumour that we read in newspapers,” he said.

With recent reports that Ajax Amsterdam management are not pleased at all following the appointment of Muhsin Ertugral last week, Mekutu confirmed that there hasn’t been any form of decision between Ajax Cape Town and Amsterdam.
