Bafana coach Gordon Igesund has encouraged PSL-based players not to go overseas, suggesting that the national team could benefit from it

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund believes that South African players should consider staying in the PSL than wanting to go overseas.

Igesund added that these players can benefit from playing in the PSL and so is the national team.

“Previously we wanted our players to go overseas to gain the experience and come back for South Africa to benefit. I think South Africa can now benefit by players not going overseas,” said Igesund during a launch of two new junior leagues in Soweto on Monday.

The national team coach believes that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is one of the best leagues in the world due to a number of sponsorships that the league and the teams have received in recent years.

This was evident when Igesund’s squad for the Afcon 2013 was dominated by the PSL-based players while included a few players from European clubs.

“There’s enough money now in the Premier Soccer League and our league is one of the best run leagues in the world. We've got a lot of money coming into the game now through the various sponsors,” added Igesund.
