thumbnail Hello,

Surprise package Platinum Stars have an opportunity to close the gap on Kaizer Chiefs when they face Bidvest Wits on Wednesday night

Platinum Stars can still push PSL leaders Kaizer Chiefs to the brink this season due to their imperious form and will target all three points against Bidvest Wits on Wednesday night at the Bidvest Stadium.

Travelling to Wits will be no easy task for Cavin Johnson’s side, but the prize of victory may motivate the team to defeat Clive Barker’s “Clever Boys”.

Unbeaten in their last three PSL encounters, Platinum Stars will be confident they can improve their record on Wednesday night. They hold a slight historical advantage over Wits with six wins compared to the home side's five in the fifteen matches between the two clubs.

Dikwena sit on equal points with Orlando Pirates and seven points adrift of Chiefs, but if they can gain victory on Wednesday the lead will be cut to four.

With a Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against SuperSport United on the horizon, Johnson’s men have opportunities on two fronts to attain well-deserved glory this season.

They next face Chippa United after their clash against the Clever Boys and should fancy all three points against the league bottom-dwellers.

A crunch match against Chiefs will follow, which should prove to determine which side will win the PSL title. Their final league match will be a home game against Maritzburg United, but the title could already be decided by then if results do not go their way.

Platinum Stars finished 10th last season and have not won a major trophy since 2006 when they claimed the first edition of the Telkom Knockout. In the same season Dikwena finished as runners-up in the PSL.

They have defied the odds this season and their dramatic rise has been due to their high-intensity on the pitch and attacking prowess backed by the goal-scoring heroics from Henrico Botes and Mogakolodi Ngele. Both strikers have netted seven times this campaign.

Their stalwart winger Thuso Phala has also been in electric form which has seen the player net four goals in twenty league starts.

Despite Platinum Stars continued good form, Cavin Johnson is not placing pressure on his team to overcome Chiefs’ lead and win the PSL title.

The loss of Thuso Phala to SuperSport United may impact heavily on Dikwena's effectiveness next season, but Cavin Johnson will be aiming for a strong end to the current campaign where his side has exceeded all expectations and set the PSL alight with their thrilling attacking football.
