Goal.com spoke with the Pirates coach Roger De Sa ahead of their crucial clash against Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday night
Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa has told Goal.com that he is more than happy to have striker Benni McCarthy back in his team, but he revealed that every player has to fight for their place in the starting line-up.
McCarthy started training with the rest of the squad a few weeks back, but he has only played once as a substitute since returning from the injury.
“Benni is part of the squad and we are happy to have him back, but that doesn’t not mean he will play in every game. There are players who have been doing well in his position,” De Sa told Goal.com.
“He’s not fully fit to play a full 90 minutes and we cannot take that risk just because the fans want him in the field. Pirates is a big club and not a one man team,” he said.
De Sa assured the Pirates fans that the relationship between him and McCarthy is great, and that he still wants to work with the former Blackburn Rovers marksman in the future.
McCarthy hasn’t signed an extension with Pirates and his contract is coming to an end in June. He is believed to be leaving Pirates at the end of the season.
“My relationship with Benni is great. There is nothing personal going on between him and I. I love working with Benni and I hope he stays at Pirates, because this is not about the two of us, but the whole team,” added De Sa.
