The struggling PSL outfit will launch the innovative campaign on Friday night to help build support for the team's fight for top-flight survival
Ajax Cape Town currently sits second from bottom on the PSL log and faces relegation into the National First Division if the team’s performances do not improve in the coming weeks.
A side which has been dogged by inexperience and inconsistent management is seeking remedies in order to promote their survival chances this term.
The Operation Block 116 initiative is designed in order to help build local support for the club at the Cape Town Stadium, a venue which has seen dwindling spectator numbers for the past few seasons.
Block 166 refers to a certain seating area in the Cape Town Stadium, which is found on the halfway line opposite the players’ tunnel.
The initiative involves spectators purchasing Ajax Cape Town flags which will reward supporters with a complimentary ticket to Block 116.
“By creating a specific area for Ajax Cape Town fans in Block 116, we hope that they will be encouraged to bring their friends and families to the game as they will be seated together with the other Urban Warriors creating a splash of Red and White in the Stadium,” Ajax Cape Town’s Public relations officer Shooz Mekuto says.
“We have further incentivised fans who are seated in this area with a fan competition. Lucky fans who find an AjaxCT sticker under their seat in Block 116 will win a prize that can be claimed at the AjaxCT Fan Kiosk at the Stadium on match day.
“I hope that all local football fanatics will take up our offer and support local football,” Mekuto concludes.
With a number of PSL clubs struggling to maintain healthy attendances in the majority of stadiums in South Africa, the Urban Warriors have decided to try and provide their fans with incentives to turn out at the Cape Town Stadium and enhance the side’s survival campaign.
Whether Operation Block 116 will be successful remains to be seen, but Ajax Cape Town is making positive steps forward in order to try and regain support for their side, when support may be a vital tonic for survival as the season edges towards its close.
