thumbnail Hello,

Even though Fifa confirmed South Africa's amazing 1-0 victory against Spain, locals are scratching their heads at the effect on the rankings

The effect of Fifa's world number 61 ranked team beating the number one seeds, Spain seems to be none. Bafana's position remained the same, despite beating the world champions.

South Africa had also beaten Swaziland 3-0 so there was no negative result to counteract Bafana's hoped for move up the rankings.

In Africa, Bafana are ranked 11th, behind the top 10 in descending order as follows:

Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Tunisia, Mali, Cape Verde, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast. Spain remain at the top of the ranking.

Meanwhile Safa has added to the confusion regarding the rankings, by exclusively telling Goal that Fifa will only update Bafana's ranking next month.

"The calculation with regards to the Fifa points is done long before the release of the actual Fifa rankings. Hence the points haven't been included in this month's edition, despite the statement saying it would. We as Safa didn't expect the points to reflect immediately, because we only received the confirmation this morning, but we are certain that those points will reflect in December, because like I said it's a process, and that's the official word from Safa," said Dominic Chimhavi, Safa HOD of Communications.

Though, other media are reporting that the reason Bafana's ranking hasn't improved is due to a low average of points over the year. A system rewarding consistency is fair, but to not improve by any position after a defining victory is bizarre.
