Igesund credits Pirates for Bafana win against Spain

The former Sundowns and Pirates tactician guided Bafana to their first ever victory over Spain in an international friendly played at the FNB Stadium

South African national team coach Gordon Igesund said after the game that Orlando Pirates’ run in the Caf Champions League did somehow influence the outcome of their international friendly against Spain.

South Africa recorded a famous win over the world champions on Tuesday night, and Igesund believes that Bafana can be more competitive if teams can do well in Caf competitions.

“The fact that Pirates got to the Caf Chamopions League final worked pretty good (for Bafana) tonight,” Igesund told reporters. “It is hugely important that our (PSL) teams do well in Africa (continental competitions),” he said.

Igesund had three Bucs players - Jali, Manyisa and Matlaba - in his starting line-up against Spain, and he said that it is high time that the PSL teams take Caf competitions seriously.

He believes that South Africa has the best league on the continent, but he wants at least more than just one team representing the country in the Caf Champions League.

“Credit to Orlando Pirates. We need to prove that we have the best league in Africa, and therefore we need to take the Caf Champions League very seriously and we need to get representation of about two teams. I am sure Kaizer Chiefs would as well. We need to get behind our teams to go play in the (Caf) Champions League,” added Igesund.
