The Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced a profit of R3.6 million from the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by South Africa in January and February
During a meeting at Safa House, the LOC revealed a net profit of R3 639 890 against a budgeted R535 139. Sponsorships boosted by 150%, and broadcasting rights from the SABC increased by 20%.
South Africa getting knocked out in the quarter final didn't hurt attendance significantly, since eventual champions Nigeria had a large following locally and with traveling support. In total 753 169 fans attended stadiums.
South African Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula was enthusiastic about the profits.
“The work of the local organising committee speaks for itself. I think it was a job well done,” he said.
“From this tournament, we should be in a position to improve even more for Chan. Our marketing is going to start earlier, unlike with Afcon, where nobody knew what was happening until the last moment.”
