Bafana and Botswana's Brazilian dream reignited as Fifa punishes Ethiopia

Fifa confirms that Ethiopia have been found guilty for fielding an ineligible player and are therefore docked three points as expected
Bafana Bafana's chances to qualify for Brazil 2014, have received a huge boost ahead of their final group match of the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier match against Botswana in September.

This comes after Fifa confirmed that the Ethiopians have been docked three points for fielding an ineligible player (Minyahile Beyene) against Botswana on June 8.

However, Fifa confirmed that the Ethiopians cannot be punished twice for the same offence which simply means their victory against Bafana still stands.

"The match is declared to be forfeited and awarded 3-0 in favour of Botswana, with the EFF also receiving a fine of CHF 6,000 after the Fifa Disciplinary Committee considered the EFF liable for having breached art. 55 par. 1 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code and art. 8 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil Regulations," said Fifa.

“The sanction relates to the Ethiopian player Minyahile Teshome Beyene failing to serve the automatic one-match suspension imposed on him following two cautions received in two different matches (art. 17 par. 3 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code),” reads the statement on the Fifa website.

Bafana will now need to beat Botswana and hope CAR win or draw against Ethiopia in the other game, to ensure their progress to the third round of the qualifiers. In the most unlikely scenario, if Botswana beat South Africa while Ethiopia lose, then only Botswana progress.
